Prevalence of low back pain and its association with age and sex among obese individuals of an adult population in Lagos Nigeria.

Abstract
Background: It has been shown that there is a relationship between low back pain (LBP) and obesity and several obese individuals suffer from low back pain. Little is known about the association between LBP and gender.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of LBP among obese individuals and their association with age and sex.
Method: Two hundred and fifty (250) adults (Male 127, Female 123) with body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above participated in this survey. They were recruited using a sample of convenience. They were required to complete a 40-item five-section structured closed ended questionnaire which collected information on bio-data, prevalence/occurrence, location, severity and number of
episodes of LBP, nature of the job, risk factors of LBP, eating habits, and participation in sporting activities/exercise. Chi-Square statistics were used to determine the association between obesity and the prevalence of LBP at a 95% confident interval.
Results: The point prevalence and 12-Month prevalence of back pain among the respondents were 58.8% and 61.60% respectively.
The majority {121 (79.0%)} of the respondents also reported having multiple episodes of low back pain, and in the majority of the respondents, the pain was moderate with only {30 (19.5%} requiring hospital treatment. There was no association between prevalence of LBP and obesity (² = 82.5, P = 0.61), and sex (² = 0.10, P = 0.27) respectively. There was an association between
the prevalence of LBP and age (² = 85.2, P = 0.04).
Conclusion: Back pain, particularly LBP was highly prevalent among the respondents, with no gender sensitivity. Efforts should be made to positively influence the risk factors for back pain in the obese, particularly lifestyle and occupation, which are
modifiable.
