Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has reached epidemic proportions in many parts of the world. It is cost-effective to screen and diagnose T2DM early using non-laboratory techniques, particularly in low-resource countries. The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) has been found useful for this purpose. However, experience with its performance is limited in our Lagos practice.
Objective: To test the performance of the FINDRISC in the identification of Nigerian subjects with or at risk of developing T2DM.
Methods: A modified FINDRISC questionnaire was administered to diabetic and nondiabetic Nigerians. Information obtained about each subject included sex, age, height, weight, waist circumference, history of consumption of vegetables or fruits, physical activity, and smoking. Results are presented as averages and percentages.
Results: We studied 136 T2DM and 46 healthy controls. The diabetic subjects were much older than the controls. Daily physical activity was about the same in DM and controls. History of diabetes in first and second-degree relatives was significantly more common in T2DM than in control subjects. Obesity and overweight were also significantly more frequent in the diabetic. FINDRISC scores were higher in the diabetic group than in the control group even after allowing for dysglycaemia associated with T2DM.
Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that the FINDRISC tool has potential for screening for T2DM in the Nigerian but more studies are needed to clearly determine its diagnostic performance in our population.
