Abstract
We are all victims of sentimentally based decisions either during our childhood, adolescence or adulthood. This paper tries to further illustrate two of the new terms – romantic memory and object of romantic consciousness – that emerge in the architextual comparative analysis [Louis Hebert (2014)] of two European romantic plays: Victor Hugo’s Hernani and Wolfgang Goethe’s Faust. This paper is to examine how the romantic memory of the major characters is awakened through the objects of romantic consciousness. This goes along with the hypothesis which stipulates that romantic behaviours can be antisocial behaviours because the romantics celebrate contradictory personal sentiments over reasoning, promote disorderliness over orderliness, disseminate chaos over system and defend individualism over rationalism as well as initiate revolution over peace. A comparative method and psychocritical method were used in order to dissect the psychology of the writers and their heroes. Romantic Movement has influenced the human race since 19th century. This modern generation is highly romantic without being conscious of their degrees of romanticism. This study revealed that there is dichotomy of classicism and romanticism which alternates from generation to generation. We are all romantic if we dream and try to live according to our dreams without minding the social and moral values, if we want to change the system, if we believe in revolution and do things differently so as to influence our world. For a new thing to occur there must be an aberration, revolution and struggle for freedom. This is the real meaning of romanticism.
