Women all over the world (Nigeria inclusive) are often relegated to certain professions, which the society has tagged as ‘women’s jobs’. These jobs include nursing, teaching, secretary, and administration while jobs like company chairman, directors of organisations, senior managers, engineers, medical doctors, and piloting of airplanes are reserved for or are dominated by men. Since the declaration of the International Women’s Year by the United Nations in 1975 the gender discourse has gained increase recognition and attention in Nigeria. The general consensus is that women have always been treated as the weaker sex; they are therefore marginalized, alienated and unable to leave the ‘purgatory’ which ceiled them off from the top. Traditionally in Africa (Nigeria inclusive), women have no role in the society aside from raising children and household chores, they are relegated to the background as they are ignorant of their legal rights or unable to claim those rights even when they are aware of them. Until recently the Nigerian corporate board has been solely a ‘male club’. This study relying on the case study methodology and employing the qualitative research methods examines the extent to which Nigerian women have been able to break free from the ‘purgatory’ syndrome.en_US
