| dc.description.abstract | This is an opinion paper that focuses on the intricate interconnection between higher education and the concept of culture of peace as it impacts on various African countries in the light of their National Policies on Education, the Millennium Development Goals and what higher education can do to promote sustainable peace and development. There is little doubt that the world needs peace and with the pockets of unrests all over the world, what contribution can higher education and women make to the spirit of sustainable culture of peace? This paper examines the eight-point United Nations Agenda on the elements that can affect the peace process as well as the need to educate women as indisputable contributors to a lasting peace process. Education plays a prominent part in any peace process and has a huge implication for all of the other variables. Not only is peace desirable, but it is necessary to practice peace responsibly in consideration for the earth and the future of humanity. Solutions like the use of the higher education platform, Information Communication Technology to spread the culture of peace, adult education as well as engaging and empowering women in the peace process and other equally effective methods were proffered for lasting peace around the globe. | en_US |
