dc.description.abstract | The study assessed flood disaster risk management in Nigerian cities. Flood disaster risk management aims to reduce the impacts and losses before, during and after flooding events. This could be undertaken by a variety of actors — individuals, communities, business organisations, local, state and national governments. However, in Nigeria, the national government is the major actor in this field, without much involvement of the other segments of the society. The magnitude of devastation on livelihoods, assets and the environment by flooding in recent times has called to question the (in) adequacy of this approach. Therefore, this study argues for an inclusive participatory approach, where all segments of the society are actively involved in flood disaster risk management. This approach, the study argues, would be a panacea to the incessant flooding and the attendant devastation on livelihoods, assets and the environment in our cities. | |
