This study examined the implications of urbanisation on the use of mother tongue for basic literacy education in the 21st century Nigeria with a view to establishing whether urbanization could affect the use of mother tongue for instructions in adult basic literacy classes. Four research questions and hypotheses were asked and postulated to guide the study. Quasi experimental and Survey research design was preferred since there was need to use few people from the population to generate data and conduct pre and posttests activities. Multistage and simple random sampling techniques were used for the selection of literacy centres and respondents respectively. 100 respondents comprising male and female were used for data collection as well as per and posttests. Structured questionnaire as well as pre and post test instruments were used. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was adopted for data entry and analysis while chi-square (x2) and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient (r) were used to test the hypotheses. The result showed that: urbanization affects the use of mother tongue in basic literacy education; learners taught with language of the environment assimilated better than those taught with the mother tongue; urbanization and policy affect the use of mother tongue for basic literacy education and urbanization affects the development of materials for basic literacy education. It recommended that: Language of Immediate Community – LIC (Pidgin English) should be used for instructions at the basic literacy classes; government should provide policy statement that would encourage the used language of environment and less emphasis on the use of mother tongue in urban areas and material for basic literacy should be produced to conform to changes and demands of urban areas.
