Abstract
The escalating occurrences of youth unemployment and its associated societal crises necessitated this study on examining the entrepreneurial empowerment of Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) among vocational and technology education undergraduates in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study raised and answered three related research questions and also formulated and tested three relevant research hypotheses. The research design adopted for this study was a descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised all the 166 final-year students vocational (Business Education and Home Economics Education) and technology education undergraduates in the federal university in Lagos State, Nigeria. The sample size consisted of 132 (approximately 80% of the population) randomly selected students from the population. The research instrument used was structured questionnaire. The internal consistency of the validated research instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha correlation coefficient and it yielded an average index of 0.82. The research questions were analysed using mean and standard deviation while t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for analyzing the data for the hypotheses. The findings show that SIWES has largely achieved its main objective of empowering students for employability and entrepreneurship. The study still revealed the need for curricula review in vocational and technology education in the sampled institution. It was therefore recommended that Government, Ministry of Education, teachers, and other relevant stakeholders should collaborate to ensure that SIWES is ideally implemented to adequately empower students for the twenty-first century entrepreneurial demands and productive school-to-work transition.
