dc.description.abstractNigeria, as one of the pluralistic and multi-religious nations in West Africa, has been experiencing an extreme form of Islamic fundamentalism from an insurgent group popularly known as Boko Haram in the North-Eastern geo-political zone of Nigeria, which has claimed several lives and properties of Nigerians in the area and beyond. This Boko Haram's violent struggle is highly sensitive and volatile by nature because it is neither a conflict between Muslims and Christians nor that of North and South of the country but which has brought the whole Nigeria to their knee. The paper attempts to examine the historical emergence of Boko Haram insurgent group in Nigeria. It would take us through the conceptual clarifications of some keywords featuring in the paper. It also examines the fundamentalistic locus standi of this group and their justifications for their insurgency. The purpose is to see the element of threat that this Boko Haram's insurgency has adversely created for pluralistic nature of Nigeria with her diverse ethnics and religious beliefs. The paper goes ahead to critically view the Boko Haram insurgency through the eyes of Islamic legal maxims through some Islamic texts and scholarly opinion of some Islamic scholars within and outside Nigeria. The side effect of Boko Haram insurgency on Islam as a religion and Muslims as Nigerians is also examined. Finally, the paper moves on to give some recommendations so as to proffer the necessary solution to the problem of insurgency in Nigeria.en_US
