Effects of Developmentally Appropriate Practice Enhancement Package on Improving Early Childhood Education Teachers’ Competence in Lagos and Ondo States, Nigeria.

Abstract
This study set out to assess the knowledge and skills of ECE teaches in Lagos and Ondo states, Nigeria with a view to an providing intervention strategy to improve teachers’ competence in working with young children. The study employed the descriptive survey and pretest-post-test control group experimental designs. The sample consisted of 245 teachers drawn from 100 private nursery schools of Lagos and Ondo states. In addition, 100 School Operators of the sampled schools were also involved in the study. Five research instruments were used to obtain data for the study. Cross tabulation statistics, percentages ancova and anova were used for data analysis. At the conclusion of this study, several findings were made. Major among them was that majority of the teachers had NCE as their qualification and this sector does not attract teachers with higher qualifications. Another startling discovery was that majority of the teachers that manned the ECE classrooms were experts in unrelated fields and at the same time did not have regular access to professional development programmes. Furthermore, another noticeable discovery in the teachers’ practice was that majority of their practices were reflection of (DIP) instead of DAP. The difficulty of gaining access into private schools and especially getting the consent of School Operators before observing the teachers affected the size of the sample. The DAP enhancement package proffered by this study was able to improve teachers’ ability to work with children though the short period of this research did not allow for provision of some Dap materials which could enhance teachers’ effectiveness. The Teachers had some limitations because some Dap materials that could have enhanced their effectiveness could not be provided for the short period of this study. Some recommendations were made such as: - further research be carried out on the influence of DAP on children’s socio- emotional and cognitive achievement in Nigeria; -School Operators in Nigeria be mandated to undergo specialized training before setting up schools; -government should also have a policy for professional development of teachers in this sector; -research is also needed in the operation of Public Nursery Schools popularly called linkage schools; -the inspectorate team of the Ministry of Education should also be trained on Dap as this will help them to adequately assess school equipment before approval of schools; -teacher education institutions should also emphasize ECE curriculum and have focused training to boost the quality of teachers in this sector; -government should encourage highly qualified lead instructors to teach at this level of education.
