Abstract
Research documents a positive association between facilitated support and well-being of the needy in later life. Other work shows that didactic support can have negative effects. Instrumental didactic support may be negative for persons with physical limitations as it may emphasize their inability to accomplish daily and academic tasks. This study contrasted the impact of facilitated and didactic affective and instrumental support on adaptation to physical and academic limitations in 360 sandwich students of education in degree programmes. After accounting for the significant, positive impact of facilitated support, didactic instrumental support had a negative effect, while didactic affective support had a positive effect on well-being. Findings underscore the importance of distinguishing the association of multiple support components and outcome to increase the understanding of managers of programmes involving adults on how support affects adaptation and well-being in later years.
