Abstract
This study asses the knowledge of civic learning in selected secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The research design was a survey and was conducted within a two-week period. The population comprised secondary school social studies teachers and students in Lagos State. The sample size was 72 students and 18 teachers. The research instrument was researchers developed, and duly validated for face, content and construct validity.The reliability of the instrument was ensured by the experts.The three research questions were tested using cumulative frequency and simple percentage Statistical tools. The findings among other revealed that civic education strengthens and compliment the development of character, social studies teachers apply the civic learning principles taught in their classrooms and similar positive patterns in the students understanding of civic learning are taught in the classrooms. Therefore, there is sufficient knowledge on how civic education strengthens and complements the development of character hence only little more effort needs to be given to reinforcing the awareness. It was recommended that Curriculum developers, the ministry of education in collaboration with the institutions of learning in Nigeria should make sure the teaching and learning of social studies and civic education strengthens and compliment the development of character, Social studies teachers should apply the civic learning principles in their classrooms among others
