The exploratory research conducted in the University of Lagos in 1997 sought to know if there were gender differentials in students’ perception and participation in violence. The study found a relationship between gender and the form of violence experienced by students with male and female students experiencing more of overt and covert forms of violence respectively. It also found that male students participated more in overt and covert forms of violence than female students and attributed their victimization to their participation. It concluded that as long as violence or its threat remains a mechanism for the control of others, the university would not achieve its aim of academic excellence.en_US
