dc.description.abstract | This study examined the higher education, manpower planning and development in Nigeria: implications for University- industry linkages. Primary data were collected, with the aid of structured questionnaire from 120 graduate workers randomly selected from. Universities, private and public organizations in South- West, Nigeria. The collected data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that graduates perform work assignments related to their field of study. In addition, higher education is related to manpower efficiency. Problems of manpower planning in Nigeria was found to be due to lack of cooperation between employers of labour and institutions of education, inadequate attention of institutions of education to labour as critical part of production process and poor political leadership. The findings also revealed that admissions of students into Universities are influenced by National University Commission policy, national manpower board requirements, federal character/quota system and national resource capacity. Based on the findings, the study there/ore, recommends that institutions of higher Learning should ensure a strong linkage with industries by designing curriculum based on human resource needs of various sectors of the economy and thereby plan for formal education, on- the- job training, in- service programmes and adult education programmes suitable for the purpose.
