Water and sand play experiences can benefit pre-school children in diverse ways. For children to enjoy these benefits however, the teacher’s knowledge of what to do and how to organise these two play types becomes important. Consequently, this study assessed pre-primary school teachers’ knowledge of water and sand play in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The study further examined the influence of area of specialisation on the teachers’ knowledge. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. Sample for the study comprised 200 pre-primary school teachers who were purposively selected from both public and private schools. The instrument used was titled “Test on Teachers’ Knowledge of Water and Sand Play (TTKWSP)”. Frequency counts, percentage, mean, standard deviation and T-test were used to analyse data. Results showed that pre-primary school teachers in Ondo West Local Government Area have average knowledge on both water and sand play. Areas of specialisation were shown to have significant influence on the teachers’ knowledge of water (t = 8.895; df = 198; p < 0.05) and sand play (t = 8.474; df = 198; p < 0.05). There is no doubt that having average knowledge on water and sand play will limit the pre-primary school teachers’ capability to plan meaningful water and sand play experiences for children. Government and private owners of pre-primary school should give opportunities to their teachers that are working with children to attend training programmes, workshops and seminars which can improve their knowledge on water and sand play. Professionally trained teachers in the field of Early Childhood Education have to be employed to manage pre-primary school classrooms in both government and private pre-primary schools.en_US
