dc.description.abstract | Students are the workers, the entrepreneurs and the policy makers of tomorrow and educational systems do prepare them for these roles through training for specific jobs and professions. The implication is that they often go through school highly focused on their specialized training without observing, examining, reflecting on and finding solutions to phenomena around them. In addition, they feel unconcerned about societal issues mostly because their needs are met by parents and other significant adults. The dynamism demanded by the global society implies that education effectively teach into and for the future, thus requiring a change in educational paradigms and transformations to incorporate reflective and critical capacity, problem solving skills, adaptability, information literacy, citizenship, continuous learning, and knowledge creation; in sum preparing citizens for sustainability and employability. Sustainability implies that education should provide a response to the needs of all the sectors of the society including the world of work. Employability implies that besides specialized skills, graduates should acquire general competencies, cultivate social and communicative skills, prepare for entrepreneurship and be flexible. These employability skills have been variously linked to the levels and models of thinking inculcated in the individual during the educational processes. Using the discipline of Literature as a reference, the study explores how educational systems can promote thinking outside the box to lead students to knowledge creation, and inevitably employment and wealth creation, as one way of solving challenges of sustainable employment in Nigeria. | en_US |
