Abstract
All over the world, it is increasingly recognized that the close link between the home and school is considered as an essential factor in facilitating educational improvement and inculcating life literacy skills. This study identifies patterns or modes of Nigerian parental involvement in children’s literacy development in the light of what obtains all over the world. The sample consisting of 200 parents of both sexes and randomly selected from the Parents- Teachers Associations in ten basic schools (public and private) in Lagos metropolis, Nigeria. Multiple approaches were used to address the research questions: family literacy theories, socio-cultural theories, theories of motivation and linguistics, were accessed through questionnaires and structured interview. Factors such as parental socio-economic status, career choice, literacy level and physical environment were found to determine the level of involvement of parents in literacy activities of children. The study recommended a continual monitoring of home literacy processes by schools as essential for literacy improvement and advocates the need for a positive change in family literacy experience and practices. Also, multiple improvement strategies for enhancing the link between child/parent and the child educational achievement were also suggested.
