dc.description.abstractWomen attending a community clinic, the Cytology Clinic of a University Teaching Hospital and a School of Nursingall in Lagos, Nigeria were investigated for their vaginal flora by cultural techniques. Bacteria associated with and without bacterial vaginosis were investigated qualitatively. Forty six different strains of bacteria were isolated some of which were unidentifiable. While Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated only from women with bacterial vaginosis, Gardnarella vagina/is was rarely isolated from them. Arthrobacter spp., Cellulomonas spp. and Corynebacterium glucuronolyticum and some unidentifiable organisms were isolated from women with and without BV. Cellulomonas spp. was the most commonly isolated bacterium in women without BV. Other bacteria found only in women without BV were Corynebacterium Group G, Brevibacterium spp., Corynebacterium ulcerans, and Oerskovia xanthineolytica. This study suggests that women with bacterial vaginosis have complex vaginal flora with many previously unidentified species and there is need for a large study to document the normal and abnormal vaginal flora in this population.en_US
