dc.description.abstract | The comparative study of the policy of Republics of Benin and Niger reveals a Franco-Nigerian tussle over who dominates the external behaviour of the two Francophone States. The French Republic claims an almost absolute right to determine the direction of the foreign policy of these two States with imperialistic machinery as her weapons. Nigeria on the other hand since 1970 has been seeking to influence the foreign policy of Benin and Niger through a lot of means including aid economic, diplomatic, cultural, historical and military ties. France in various ways has resented the Nigerian incursion into a 'French sphere of influence'. The Marxism-Lennism declaration of Benin as not relaxed the French imperialistic hold of the country. The activities of the Communist world in the two Francophone states have at best been nominal. Chapter 1 examines the effectiveness of imperialism as a framework with a slight modification of Johan Galtung's 'Structural Theory of Imperialism' Chapter II discusses the overt and covert ways by which Nigeria influences the foreign policy of Benin and Niger with some discussions on their relations with neighbouring states. The third chapter analyses the causes of few intra-continental interactions among African small state. The fourth chapter exposes French imperialism in Benin and Niger while the fifth chapter emphasises the need for re-orientation. | en_US |
