This study examined poverty as one of the leading factors of HIV/AIDS prevalence in Nigeria by gaining insight into both theoretical and empirical relationship between poverty and the spread of HIV/AIDS infection in Nigeria. Objective statistical record of the spread of HIV/AIDS by UNAIDS in 2006 were investigated. Findings shows that there was a consistent increase in poverty level between 1985 and 1996 while the level of poverty between 1996 and 2004 was decreased by 11% and almost at the same time between 1997 and 2005 there was an increase in the number of people living with HIV/AIDS increased by 700,000. With this finding, it may be concluded that poverty has nothing to do with the HIV/AIDS prevalence since at almost the same period when poverty level decreased HIV/AIDS infection increased. However, understanding of the nature of HIV/AIDS which may not manifest several years after infection may be responsible for the increase in HIV/AIDS when poverty level is reducing. As times goes on there may be reduction in HIV/AIDS infection if the poverty level continues to decrease. Therefore recommendations are proffered that the government should intensify efforts in poverty alleviation programs, NGO should help the government to meet the needs of the society and individuals who are well- to -do in the society should render help in alleviating poverty among the peopleen_US
