- ItemOpen AccessEvaluation of the use and effectiveness of telemedicine among the health professionals during the COVID 19 lockdown period: A cross sectional study.(J Clin Sci, 2021) AKINBOBOYE B OBackground: Telemedicine has been documented as a viable option in attending to patient’s need where distance is a critical factor. The Federal Government of Nigeria on March 27, 2020, imposed a total lockdown in Lagos state in orderto curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19) pandemic. The restriction in movement prevented many patients from attending their regular clinics and physical consultations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use and effectiveness of telemedicine among the hospital health professionals during the lockdown period. Methods: This was an online cross sectional study among doctors at a tertiary health facility in Lagos. Ethical approval was obtained from the institutional ethical committee. A list of the telephone and WhatsApp contacts of doctors were obtained from the hospital directory; the SurveyMonkey tool was used as an online web based structured questionnaire for data collection. The information obtained was analyzed to find means and averages. Results: A total of 104 doctors completed the survey. The proportion of participants who used telemedicine was 93.3%, with the most commonly used telemedicine option being phone call (27.1%) and WhatsApp video call (27.1%). The main management provided during this period was counseling (56.6%). Seventy nine percent of the participants were satisfied with the result of the management provided through telemedicine options, but the major concern was that of ethical issues (36.2%). Majority (44.2%) of the respondents agree that telemedicine was effective during the COVID 19 lockdown period. Therewas no association found between gender, age, designation, and perceived effectiveness of telemedicine by respondents in this study (P = 0.88, 0.4, and 0.07, respectively). Conclusion: Telemedicine was found to be a useful tool for effective patient’s management during the lockdown period although there exist ethical concerns. The formulation of policies guiding its use will ensure the security of information and patient’s confidentiality.
- ItemOpen AccessLearning domains and desire for specialization in prosthodontics: survey of Nigerian final year dental students. Nigerian Journal of Restorative Dentistry(Nigerian Journal of Restorative Dentistry, 2022) AKINBOBOYE B OObjectives: Specialist prosthodontist for the training of undergraduate dental students are in short supply in Nigeria. Performance in domains of learning among dental undergraduate students may serve as indicator of performance in domains of learning to the desire of specialisation in prosthetic dentistry , among final year Nigerian dental undergraduates . Methods: Final year dental students(N= 168) in nine established dental schools in Nigerian universities were contacted to participate in an electronically administered mixed method questionnaire survey between February and May 2021. The questionnaire was designed to collect data related to self perceived abilities in domains of learning , challenges with the undergraduate Prosthodontic course and desire for postgraduate prosthodontic specialization. Responses were related with selected sociodemographic variables. Results: Response rate for the survey was 76.8% Three quarter (75.2%) of respondents attended institutionswith full prosthodontists. Only 25.6%expressed a desire for postgraduate prosthodontic specialization. Scores in domains of learning were average: Cognitive- 67.9%; Affective - 65%; and Psychomotor 62%(IQR 58-73). Psychomotor scores correlated positively with cognitive (r=0.61, p=0.001), and affective domain (r=0.47, p=0.001)scores. Respondents that considered specializing in prosthetic dentistry recorded significantly higher scores (cognitive p=0.002, affective p=0.001 and psychomotor p=0.001). Absence of a full time prosthodontists did not affect performance scores. Respondents expressed concerns about teaching methodology and the absence of adequate infrastructure. Conclusons: Performance in domains of learning prosthetic dentistry was predictive of future interest in specialization. Modified teaching methods may improve outcomes.
- ItemOpen AccessOral Health Status and Diet Habit of Institutionalized Elderly Group.(Annals of biomedical Sciences, 2018) AKINBOBOYE B OObjectives: the objective of the study was to determine the oral health status and diet habits of institutionalized elders in Lagos, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among institutionalized elders in Lagos State, Nigeria. Age and sex matched non-institionalized elderly were also selected to serve as control for the study. Data were obtained through interviewer - administered questionnaire and clinical oral examination was carried out. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results A total of 100 subjects with age range 60-90years participated in the study. Majority of the subjects in institutions were widows. Socioeconomic class was a strong factor determining institutionalization(P=0.016). Oral hygiene of institutionalized elders was poor compared with non-institutionalized counterpart (p<0.05). None (0%) of the institutionalized subjects wore any form of prosthesis compared to their non -institutionalized counterpart -63.2%-(p<0.05). There was a significant association between association between education and dental status of subjects (p<0.05). Edentulism and soft diet were significantly associated(p<0.05). Conclusion: Oral health status of the institutionalized elders was poor compared to the non-institutionalized elderly but diet habits were relatively the same in both studied groups.
- ItemOpen AccessPresentation and management of ectodermal dysplasia: case report(University of Lagos Journal of Dental Sciences, 2018) AKINBOBOYE B OEctodermal dysplasia is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorder with about 192 rare traits having absent , incomplete or delayed development of one or more of the four ectodermal spprndages of hair, teeth, nails and sweat glands. Oral manifestations Include agenesis of primary and permanent teeth, which manifest clinically as hypodontia, or anodontia. A case of ectodermal dysplasia is reported with clinical presentation of prominent lips, nasal bridge and forehead, wrinkling and hyperpigmentation of peri-orbital and peri-oral region. The patient also presented with hypodontia and conical incisors. Restoration of malformed teeth was carried out and missing teeth were replaced with removable prosthesis. Successful dental treatment involves a holistic approach with input from the various dental specialties.

- ItemOpen AccessProsthetic experience of teaching and learning of fabrication of removable partial denture among the Nigerian Dental Schools.(University of Lagos Journal of Dental Sciences, 2019) AKINBOBOYE B OObjective: Partial edentulism is as a result of increased risk of caries and other factors with resultant tooth loss, which would require replacement with fixed or removable prosthesis (RPD). RPD is mostly used and its training of fabrication would require student and teachers involvements. The aim of this study is to investigate the methods used toteach removable partial denture prosthodontics to undergraduate dental students in Nigeria dental schools with the purpose of ascertaining efficiency, uniformity and proffering solutions. Materials and Method:This descriptive cross sectional study was carried out in seven (7) Nigerian dental schools across the country from April to June 2018.Structured questionnaires were distributed among teachers, laboratory technologists and 500/600 level students in each of the dental school through hand- delivery and postal system. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were observed in this study. Ethical approval was obtained from Health Research Ethics Committec,Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. The dat obtained from the study were analysed using descriptive statistics with the aid of SPSS (IBM version 20). Results:One hundred and eleven completed questionnaires were returned (55%) from the students out of the two hundred questionnaires distributed. Fifteen laboratory technologists (57.7%) and eleven lecturers (42.3%)responded.About 77% out of all the universities selected responded,(seven out of ten dental schools). The proportion of lecturers and technologists satisfied with their method of teaching and assessment was 53.8%. Conclusion:There was no uniformity in methods of RPD teaching and learning in the various dental schools in Nigeria with reduced clinical work undertaken because of inadequate provision of human and material resources.
- ItemOpen AccessProsthetic management in orofacial trauma(Nigerian Journal of Dental and Maxillofacial Traumatology, 2019) AKINBOBOYE B OOrofacial trauma result in tissue loss that can be of soft tissue, hard tissue or both tissues. This tissue loss can range from minimal to extensive tissue loss and the result can be impairment of oral function and compromise in quality of life. In management of orofacial trauma, various factors such as defect site, extent age among other factors are considered. There are variety of prosthetic replacement option depending on site of defect and these ranges from removable denture, fixed prosthesis, dental implants, obturators, nasal prosthesis, orbital prosthesis and auricular prosthesis. The advent of three-dimensional (3D) technologies has enabled the design and manufacture of prosthesis using computer aided design/ computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software that has helped in realization of treatment goals.
- ItemOpen AccessReligiosity and self efficacy in complete denture wearer. 2019;1: 14 – 20.(Nigerian Journal of Medical and Dental Education, 2019) AKINBOBOYE B O; Mersel, A.; Malomo, B.; Olawuyi, A.Objective: Religiosity has been reported to contribute to psychological well-being. Psychological well-being has a significant influence on satisfaction of complete denture treatment among other factors. Satisfaction of complete denture results in improved self-efficacy. It is expected that there should be a significant association between religiosity and self-efficacy of denture treatment in complete denture wearer. The objective is to determine the association between religiosity and self-efficacy among complete denture wearer. Methods: Participants wearing complete denture for a minimum period of 2 years were administered standardized psychological instrument (19 items) used to test for religiosity and 12 items for self-efficacy. A Likert scale of maximum score of 4 was used for each item. Data was gathered and analysed using IBM SPSS version 21. Categorical variables were presented as frequencies and percentages. Spearman Correlation test was performed. Results: Thirty participants were recruited but only 28 conformed to study protocol. Mean age was 62 ± 0.50 years, 18 (64.3%) participants were males while 10 (35.7%) were females. Religious affiliations of participants were either Christian (21; 75%) or Islamic religion (7; 25%). Median score of spirituality was 43.5 and denture self-efficacy was 30. Spearman rank correlation test to determine the relationship between spirituality and denture self -efficacy values showed a weak positive monotonic relationship (rs = 0.13, n = 28, p=0.40). Conclusion: There is a weak positive association between religiosity and denture self-efficacy, which is not significant. Religiosity does not necessarily determine self -efficacy in denture wearers
- ItemOpen AccessTreatment Needs, demand association of missing and replaced tooth among older population in a rural setting.(Nigerian Journal of dental research, 2019) AKINBOBOYE B OObjectives: To determine the need, demand, association between missing and replaced tooth in older population in a rural setting. Methods: Pretested structured questionnaire were administered seeking dental needs and demand. Likert scale ranging from 0 - 4 additive index was used to score intensity of symptoms(12 items). This individual score was aggregated to give a maximum score of 48. Descriptive statistics was calculated , categorical variables were presented as frequencies and percentages. Chi -square test and student T test was used to determine statistically significant differences. Results: The study participants were 393 with a mean age of 67.29+/-7.19 years. The DMFT index was 2.74+/-5.34[Decayed(19.6%)teeth mean -0.40+/-1.06)-, missing(58.1%, mean -2.35+/- 4.28), No filled teeth]. Only 1.3% were edentulous and 33.3% had Kennedy Class III. Mean index of felt need was 12. 95+/-4.5 and 30.4% of those with mild felt needs demanded dental care(p=0.003). Only 33.6% of population demanded for dental care, 42.5%had dental pain/ discomfort in the past 12 months and 88.5% of this population visited the dentist (p<0.001). Mild felt needs (p=0.001), affordability(p<0.001) and socioeconomic status(p=0.023) were factors that influenced demand. The average missing teeth (2.35+/- 4.28) was higher than average replaced teeth (0.39+/-1.09)(p<0.0001). Conclusion: The average felt need was mild and the demand for oral care was low. Average number of replaced teeth was significantly lower than average number of missing teeth.
