- ItemOpen AccessEnsuring Sustainable Environment and Development: A Study of Solid Waste Management in the University of Lagos, Nigeria(University of Eldoret, Kenya. Kyambogo University, Uganda. Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Nigeria., 2018-04-05) Bakare, T.V.Management of waste is vital to environmental sustainability and sustainable development efforts which are key goals of the SDGs. This experimental research examined solid waste management within the University system. It employed a combination of enlightenment and the introduction of a specifically designed bottle-shaped dust-bin to ascertain sorting of solid waste into appropriate containers and encourage the University residential community’s adherence to the reduce, reuse and recycle (3Rs) approach. The study was conducted using Sensitization Campaigns, Interviews, Observation and the Questionnaire. The research raised five questions and used a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques for data gathered from 250 residents of the staff living quarters of the University of Lagos, Nigeria. A careful examination and measurement of the contents of existing dustbins revealed that there was up to 75% increase in the adherence rate to recycling after the campaigns. The various challenges faced were noted and it was emphasized that in order to bring about environmental sustainability, the driving principle must be sustainable development, and the University system must re-examine its role in leading-by-example to increase its contribution to sustainable development. It is hoped that if the idea of the self-explanatory bottle-shaped bin is adopted, it can be useful in encouraging proper sorting of garbage. The study finally proposed a model for sustainable development within the University environment and in the society at large that will be responsive to environmental sustainability.

- ItemOpen AccessEradicating rural illiteracy through adult education programmes in Lagos State, Nigeria(Department of Lifelong and Continuing Education, University of Lagos, Nigeria, 2018-07) Yinusa, ORural communities are faced with diverse problems that hinder their growth and development as a result of their level of illiteracy; for example, illiteracy has reduced the quality of living standard, in fact, it has worsened the hope of survival owing to problems such as lack of access to basic education, schools, dearth of social amenities and ignorance. This study therefore, examined adult education programmes as a means of eradicating rural illiteracy in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey research design of “ex-post-facto” type. The population of the study consists of rural inhabitant of Kosofe local government area. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select a sample size of two hundred (200) respondents. Four research questions were answered; and one hypothesis was tested to guide the findings of the study. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection and was validated by experts. The reliability coefficient of 0.97 was obtained for the instrument. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic of chi-square (χ 2 ) to test the hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. The outcome of the study revealed that; there is a significant difference between adult education programmes and reduction of rural illiteracy. The study concluded and recommended that; to eradicate illiteracy among adults in the rural communities, literacy education which comprises of basic and post literacy education as well as empowerment education need to be adequately provided so as to prevent the possibility of participants relapsing to illiteracy and equally raise their standard of living for personal and community development.
- ItemOpen AccessThe need for quality assurance in adult education(Journal of Pedagogical Thought Tanzania, 2011-10-05) Bakare, T.V.This paper examines the complexity of adult education and the dearth of quality assurance practices in adult education programs in direct comparison with the practice in formal education. It presents lack of policy as a contributory factor and advocates more awareness of adult education as a bona fide field while reiterating the necessity to pay more attention to quality assurance in adult education. The paper argues that more attention is presently paid to quality assurance in the formal education sector and most efforts to improve the education system in Nigeria has been more concerned with the formal educational system especially below the tertiary level. The discourse further proposes a model quality assurance prototype for adult education to be followed for best practices. Quality assurance is an equally necessary process in the practice of adult education, even if it has hitherto been neglected, it is essential to establishing and instilling a stronger sense of awareness of quality and ensuring continual improvement in the practice.
- ItemOpen AccessSustainable development in Lagos state: the role of adult education in ensuring sustainable management of the environment(Journal of the Faculty of Education, University of Calabar, 2018-06) Bakare, T.V.Rapid urbanization in a bid to develop has led to many unfavourable conditions in Nigeria, like the development of slums, overcrowding and sub-standard living conditions, as well as poverty. This is a vicious cycle of cause and effect, with all indicators leading back to the root cause of poverty. Humans as the cause of environmental degradation must be more conscious of the implication of the repercussions of development. The urgent need to pay more attention has become more pressing in the face of climate change, diseases and endemic poverty. This paper focuses on the environmental issues in Lagos with a view to influencing government policy and implementation strategies with rigorous adult education. Lagos is the largest urban city in the country and faces different challenges in engendering environmental sustainability. The government’s efforts at sustaining the environment seem like a losing battle in the face of the overwhelming and often peculiar circumstances surrounding the urban poor. The paper examines the various factors and challenges that contribute to environmental degradation, government’s efforts to combat them, and concludes by suggesting a model of operation for the government and other stakeholders, along with commensurate adult education programs. The paper contributes to the discourse on the role of adult education in managing the environment sustainably in the midst of development efforts.
