Introduction to history and policy of education

It is an undisputable fact, that educational history and development in Nigeria, cannot be lucidly narrated without talking about the three fundamentally distinct systems of education, they are;, the indigenous or African Traditional system of education, the Quranic schools or Islamic education and finally the Christian Missionary or Formal or Western system of education. Before the advent of the colonial masters in the social formation now known as Nigeria, in 1472, the various communities and ethnic groups that make up Nigeria lived homogenously at different kingdoms and empires under their respective traditional rulers. They were almost self sustained and had mutual understanding and coexistence with one another. They also had their own unique educational pattern that suited their immediate environments and according to their needs. This chapter carefully discusses in simple terms without the stress of crowded verbiage, the brief history of each of the three fundamental systems of education in Nigeria, their goals, characteristics, the challenges and prospects of these educational systems.
