- ItemOpen AccessStaff Personnel Management and Productivity in Ikeja Local Education District of Lagos state(Awemark Industrial Printers, 2003) Bello, S. A.Staff management, whether in business, industry, church or school, lies at the core of the efficiency of the organization. Indeed the entire function called' administration' may be defined as getting things done through the efforts of other people. The extent to which the school. executive is able to manage his staff determines to a large extent the degree of the efficiency and consequently the level of the productivity of the school, Nwankwo (1985). . Recruitment, that is process of enlistment of new members into a group, and through which they become part and parcel of administration of an organization, has some relationship in the productivity of an institution like the school. Selection of personnel. for the school system is one of the most critical decisions that confront the school administrators. If a bad judgement is made, the process of correction can be too long and cumbersome, particularly in the school system, where personnel are so difficult to dismiss as against the situation in private enterprises where provisions are made for summary dismissal. Ukeje (1992) states that the recruitment and retention of competent people in the teaching profession is a perennial problem all over the world the further stressed that education anywhere has to attract high calibre of teaching personnel so as to improve its quality and productivity. , The focus of this study therefore is to etermine the productivity of school administration vis-a-vis the style of recruitment adopted by the government agency charged with the responsibility of employing the teaching personnel. 244 COl/temporary Issues ill Educational Management: Book of Honour; 2003 This study is very significant in the sense that the findings of the study will enable the Ikeja Local Education District of Lagos State set a very strong and productive standard in the recruitment, selection and placement of teachers.

- ItemOpen AccessIssues in the Administrative Behaviour of School Headteachers(Department of Educational Management, University of Ilorin, Nigeria., 2004-06-06) Onyene, V. E.Management and control are essential ingredients for the attainment of organisational goals, especially in the Nigerian educational system. With increased need for deregulated school system, private school administrative success or failure has come to be of great concern. This paper is a conceptual framework bordering painfully on management crisis, which is fast eroding the operation of and of course interest in private school establishment. It notes that private schools rise and fall due to two major factors of either total lack of administrative competence on the part of untrained head teachers or ignorance on the part of the proprietors who double as owner manager with short time profit-making motives. Fundamental administrative behaviour challenges are extensively discussed in this paper in a manner expected to enhance functional engagement of incumbents. There is need for head teachers to possess the right type of skills, knowledge, mastery and multiple relational styles as facilities for efficient harnessing of resources for optimal results. Thus, the paper insists that intellectual capacity, benchmarking and informational skills, group decision-making, time and task organisation, policy and programme mix, conducive interpersonal relationships as well as flexible innovative competence are required to cope with dynamics of Nigerian service environment, with the schools as the most sensitive organization. The application of the A.E.I.O.U. model is illustrated and recommended for staff involvement in running private schools.
- ItemOpen AccessEvaluation of Job Involvement Potency of Male and Female Managers in Education: Implications for Balancing Gender Gap in Employment(The Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, 2004-06-12) Onyene, V. E.This study investigated if any difference exists in the job involvement of men and women who are in the headship of Nigeria tertiary institutions. The essence of the study is to assert or disregard discriminatory practices of not having an equitable number of women at the helm of affairs in the educational system. Data were collected from 132 education managers (83 men and 49 women) at the top echelon of tertiary institution headship, using the Job Involvement (Self) instrument designed by Lodahl and Kejner (1965). Data were analyzed using student t-test, and regression statistics. Result showed among others that the tested men and women differ in their job commitment and that the variations of difference are predicted by variables other than gender, such as, age educational qualification and work experience. It is recommended that women who are into teaching or stereotype job areas should be given opportunity to head decision-making areas in education in order to achieve internal system efficiency and to sustain the standard of education.

- ItemOpen AccessEvaluation of Interactive Behaviour of Private School Administrators: Determining Entrepreneurship for the Millennium(Department of Educational Administration, University of Lagos, 2005-06-12) Onyene, V. E.The human dimension to school administration is receiving pre-eminent consideration in recent times, especially with increasing investment interests in this crucial area by modern male and female administrators. Moreover, private initiatives have also been acknowledged as the most effective process for shedding the load of educational provision. This study examines relational behaviour of forty-four private school managers operating within Lagos metropolis. The aim of the study is to analyse the correlates of head-teachers' initiative behaviour as they go about their administrative staffing function in these cost-intensive investment entities called private schools. Data was collected from those forty-four private school administrators from Mainland and Shomolu local councils of Lagos State. The major findings revealed among others that most head-teachers still have problems of 'relating' with their staff. For example the check-list shows a range statistic of only two of ten variables depicting consistently exhibited behaviour above fifty per cent (a little above average). Again, while some subordinates interacted freely with head-teachers who share their personal problems more our-going and officially blunt, there still exist critical cases where most head-teachers are inconsistent in their "sharing, vulnerability and openness" behaviour. Although, human or interpersonal skills of school administrators are most essential to the attainment of both internal efficiency and goal attainment motives, oral interview shows that some of them are unfortunately lacking in such areas.
