Abstract
This article examines what role the mass media can play in the establishment and entrenchment of freedom, democracy, and development in Nigeria. The author did a rundown of the history of the mass media in Nigeria and concluded that there is an urgent need for a role change. The belief is that the mass media watchdog role be changed to a guide dog role. This is based on the belief that the watchdog role has not helped build democratic culture which will translate into development.
