Abstract
There is an increasing environmental concern over i mproper disposal of spent engine oil (SEO) from serviced engines. These concerns are the results of increasing pollution of the environment by SEO with its negative consequences on plants and other forms o effect of Macrophomina phaseolina and nutritional a mendment on Luffa aegyptiaca grown on spent e n g i n e o i l p o l l u t e d s o i l i n a s c r e e n h o u s e . T h e e f f e c t o f S E O a n d n u t r i t i o n a l a m e n d m e n t o n L . aegyptiaca was assessed on g ermination, plant height, leaf area, stem girt and number of leaves. Two concentrations of SEO (100 and 200ml) in four k ilogram of soil were used in four replications each. Results show that SEO adversely affected the germination and growth of L aegyptiac delayed germination, reduction in heights, leaf are a and number of leaves were observed in the crop planted in SEO polluted soil. Germination (eme rgence) of L. aegyptiaca seeds planted in SEO polluted soil began after four days compared to two days fo efficiency for seeds planted in unpolluted soil was up to 100% but reduced to 20% when the soil w a s p o l l u t e d w i t h S E O . H o w e v e r , n u t r i t i o n a l a m e n d m e n t a n d M . p h a s e o l i n a i n c r e a s e d s e e d g e r m i n a t i o n i n S E O p o l l u t e d s o i l were thus shown to enhance the germination and grow th of L. aegyptiaca in SEO polluted soil.
