Abstract
The study was carried out to ascertain if there is any relationship between personality traits and position negotiation modes adopted by married couples during interpersonal communication. The study was given impetus by the high, disturbing and incessant marriage breakdowns and divorce in Nigeria. It was also premised on the fact that effective communication has been affirmed to be the life wire of marital relationships. The study adopted the survey design. The population of the study was drawn from working class married men and women in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State. A total of 120 respondents M/ereselected using the stratified sampling technique. Data were collected using Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and Argumentativeness Scales (ARGS). Two research questions were answered while one hypothesis was tested in the study. The study revealed among others that; the respondents vary in their personality traits; there are obvious differences in the position negotiation adopted by male and female respondents; personality traits and position negotiation modes do not necessarily follow gender role expectations; and there is no significant relationship between personality traits and position negotiation modes couples adopted during interpersonal communication. The study concluded that the fact that there is no significant relationship between personality traits and position negotiation modes does not completely rule out the influence of individual differences that couples bring to the marriage relationship which may influence how decisions are made and how disagreements are resolved. It was therefore recommended that couples should be taught to understand and appreciate these individual differences in order to enhance marital stability, satisfaction, and happiness among them thereby reduce incidences of marriage breakdown and divorce to the barest minimum.
