Abstract
The placenta (derived from the Greek word plakuos= flat cake) is a unique organ which has both fetal and maternal components and is essential for the harmonious coexistence of the fetus and the mother. The fetal membranes are the thin layers of tissue which surround the embryo or fetus and provide for its nutrition, respiration, excretion and protection. They include the yolk sac, allantois, amnion and chorion but it is the latter two that are commonly referred to as the 'membranes'. The yolk sac and allantois merely have rudimentary functions in the human embryo and shall only be discussed briefly.
