Abstract
This paper is an attempt to ascertain the extent of the relationship between universal basic education and adult and non-formal education with a view to establishing how adult and non-formal education can be repositioned to contribute meaningfully to the achievement of the goals of universal basic education. To achieve this end, the paper believes that the present status of adult and non-formal education in Nigeria should be revisited to accord it the right recognition it deserves. Adult and non-formal education should be made an integral part of the formal school system if it is to be used as a tool in the universal basic education scheme. It is only through this that it can help in enhancing access to education, improve quality and quantity of education and reduce drastically the rate of illiteracy and disparity in education.
