dc.description.abstractSecuridacalongepedunculata (polygalaceae) is a shrub found growing in Nigeria and some parts of Africa. Several studies support its reported cytotoxicity to cancer cells. However, the mechanism by which it cures cancer has not been fully elucidated. The aim of the study is to compare the alkylating activity of aqueous root-bark extract of S. longepedunculata (polygalaceae) and chlorambucil. The nitrobenzyl pyridine assay was used to determine the alkylating activity of S. longepunculata. The results indicate a time- and concentration-dependent increase in alkylating activity of S. longepedunculata. Securidacalongepedunculata shows cytotoxicity through its alkylating activity which is comparable to chlorambucil.
