- ItemOpen AccessAssessment of Environmental Consciousness among Patrons in Selected Academic and Public Libraries in Lagos Metropolis(Electronic Green Journal, 2020) Alabi, A.O.Environmental consciousness encompasses a lot of engagements and actions either to reverse or repair the damage done to the environment. As part of ensuring safe living, "going green," has therefore become an intensifying international and multidisciplinary concern in contemporary society (Fallik, Soper and Sparks, 2012). The United Nations has been actively involved in environmental protection through the Eco Day or World Environment Day celebrated annually in over 143 countries every 5th day of June since 1974. The Eco Day is the United Nation's main flagship campaign for raising awareness on protection of the environment from pollution, global warming, climate change and so forth. With the increasing emphasis on prevailing poor environmental conditions in most countries, environmental sustainability is a major area of research and concern in this current dispensation (Kurbanoğlu and Boustany, 2014).
- ItemOpen AccessBridging the Great Divide: Librarian-faculty Collaboration in Selected Higher Institutions in Lagos State Nigeria(Elsevier, 2018) Alabi, A.O.This paper examines librarian-faculty collaboration in selected academic libraries in Lagos State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling method was used to select five out of a total population of nine higher institutions in Lagos State. Questionnaire was used as the major instrument for data gathering among librarians in the selected institutions. The study found that librarians are willing to collaborate with faculty in the areas of providing Current Awareness Services (CAS), working with accreditation teams, and helping to develop both the media and information literacy skills of students. The study also found that librarians believe that faculty board meetings and library committee initiatives are effective platforms for promoting librarian faculty collaboration. Further, the study identified essential skills for librarian-faculty collaboration. Overall, findings show that a weak negative correlation exists between gender and area of collaboration at N=38, r=−0.136, p < 0.05. The survey also found a significant weak negative relationship between age and area of collaboration (N=38, r=−0.379, p < 0.05). No significant relationship was found between work experience and area of collaboration (r=−0.067, p=0.696 > 0.05). The study therefore suggests that stakeholders in higher education should imbibe the culture of expanding and strengthening collaboration between librarians and faculty.
- ItemOpen AccessEthical Decision Making and Academic Library Management:Prospects and challenges(Nigerian Library Association, Ogun State Chapter, 2016) Egberongbe, H.SThe changing role of academic libraries enabled by rapid advances in information and communication technology (ICT) and changing user expectation has necessitated development of new competencies to improve service delivery. The changing environmental factors have spawned new ethical issues other than the existing ones. Ethical decision making is identified as essential to ensuring effective organisational performance as well as its success. Three fundamental theories of ethical decision making - Kohlberg's (1969); Trevino (1986); Rest's (1986) - are reviewed to establish variables that influence ethical decision making in Nigerian academic libraries. This is in light of the changing organisational developments occasioned by global advances in technology. A derivation of Shorb's (2004) model of ethical decision making is used to propose a model of library administration model of ethical decision making that seeks to connect basic values, interceding processes and final resulting actions for Nigerian academic libraries.
- ItemOpen AccessFaculty awareness and use of Library Information products and services in Nigerian Universities(Library Progress International, 2007) Popoola, S.O; Zaid, Y.AThis paper discusses faculty awareness and use of library information products and services in South-West Nigeria universities. Systematic random sampling method was used to select 446 faculty members from a population of 4,459 in the universities. A questionnaire formed the major instrument for data gathering. The response rate achieved was 89.7 percent and the reliability coefficient of the questionnaire used was 0.72. The study found that there was a significant difference in faculty awareness of available library information products and services. In addition, they did not have sufficient knowledge of those library products and services pertinent to their teaching and research activities. The survey also revealed that the level of knowledge of faculty staff had positive relationship with the frequency of use, consultation with the librarians, faculty status and membership of library related committees. User education programmes coupled with planned public relations were recommended to improve faculty awareness of library information products and services.

- ItemOpen AccessThe study of internally generated revenue by university libraries in Nigeria(Journal of the Nigerian Library Association, 2008) Zaid, Y.AThe paper discusses the need for academic libraries in Nigeria to promote marketing concept of information products and services as a viable source of generating revenue to augment income from their parent institution. The approach adopted was to review existing literature with visits to selected libraries to investigate how each library was funded. The next approach was to examine efforts made by each library to supplement what comes from parent institution knowing that it was inadequate. Analysis of data from the pre-tested and post-implemented questionnaire revealed the need for marketing concept to be introduced. The findings reveal that Academic libraries in Nigeria have been under-funded including the private universities when you consider their volume of the library Collection. The 10% Library Development Fund (LDF) has stopped coming to the federal universities. Librarians have positive attitude towards different aspect of marketing of information products and services. There is an indication that further training on marketing application and ICT are needed by librarians in Academic Libraries. Considerations should be given to means of delivering such training by library administrators. The result and discussion imply that in order for Nigerian academic libraries to survive in the information market of the 21st Century, there is need for some Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) activities to be introduced which will make library services efficient, viable and relevant. It is hoped that this work will provide a spring board for library administrators and further researchers to erode the misconception that academic libraries is under authority and as such cannot make financial decisions regarding marketing aspects.

- ItemOpen AccessUtilisation of Information Communication Technologies (IETs) in Reference Services of Academic Libraries: Threats and Challenges(2008-12) Ukachi, N.BThis study, which focuses on the threats and challenges of using Information Communication Technologies in reference services of academic libraries, was carried out using 600 questionnaires and observation as materials for data collection. Survey method of investigation was adopted for this study. The data collected was analyzed in table using percentages and frequencies. Mean and standard deviation was equally used to show overall average score. The findings of the research indicated inadequate number of these facilities, limited duration of use, not being allowed to save information into storage media like diskettes and flash drives as some of the major threats and challenges to the optimal utilization of these facilities. Suggestions such as extending duration of use, working towards generation of funds internally to augment allocation so as to able to acquire additional facilities among others were recommended to check the threats and challenges.
