Permit me to speak briefly about the challenge to raise a new generation of leaders. Leaders are vital because Visionary leaders don't wait for the future to come; they create it. They don't wait for ot~ers, they take the initiative to make new things happen. Leadership is thus about taking. ~i~al.decisions. This ability to takegood initiatives is motivated by vision that IS, the. imaginative power of perceivi'ng a clear picture of what is desired, and how to translate such a vision into reality. In other words, leaders do not simply dream about good visions, they take practical steps to translate dreams into reality.

We are determined to restore Senate to its full glory, conscious at all times to its responsibilities and duties to ensure that the quality of our products is second to none.
- ItemOpen AccessBuilding a Successor-Generation: Reflections on Values and Knowledge in Nation Building(2017-01-23) Fayemi, K.It is with great pride that I participate in the 2017 Convocation ceremony of my alma mater - the University of Lagos - UNILAG. It is always fascinating to return to these scenic and historic grounds of learning, situated in one of the most dynamic cities in the world. I am most grateful to the authorities for honouring me with this hallowed platform to share a few thoughts with this set of graduating students in particular and the university community at large as this year's convocation lecturer. When the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon A. Bello first notified me of my being selected to deliver the 2015/2016 convocation lecture, the first thought that came to my mind was "what would I say?" Convocation lectures traditionally have a defined structure. The university authorities usually invite an individual that has attained some measure of success in life, to share hislher story, with the hope that the graduating students can learn a thing or two about what to expect in the 'real world', as the larger society is often called. So I assume I am expected to speak about my experiences in life, in the more than three decades since I graduated, with the hope that those whose turn it is today can have an idea of at to expect out there. I am also supposed to dispe se some hope about the bright prospects that the olds, and offer some useful advice that would guide e going forward. Considering these expectations of the . ional convocation speech, I must apologise in advance eradventure I don't live up fully to this billing. This is because my presentation today would dwell more on pointing you back to some of life's key lessons that are available within a university, which are enough to prepare you for life after graduation. Many years ago, I matriculated into this university, thrown into a whole new universe, not knowing what to expect. As a na'ive and unassuming youth, all I came to UNILAG with was eagerness to learn and zeal to explore. At graduation, I was undoubtedly a different person. This institution provided the conditions for me to discover myself; find my voice; and hone my worldview and core values
- ItemOpen AccessBuilding a Sustainable Future-Ready University: Ideas and Perceptions of a Financial Manager(2024-12-17) Odekunle, L. A.The concept of a 'future-ready university' has emerged as a central focus in today’s educational landscape, presenting both a renewed emphasis and a transformative frontier in higher education discourse and management. The post-pandemic era, marked by rapid technological advancements and global economic challenges, has intensified the need to rethink universities' roles and their readiness for the future. A university is deemed future-ready when it not only addresses today’s challenges but also remains resilient and adaptable in overcoming the uncertainties of tomorrow. Among the sustainability factors contributing to the future readiness of a university, financial sustainability appears to stand out as a critical cornerstone as I view through the lens of a financial manager. By the definition of the United Nations, sustainability encompasses three key pillars: environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability. In the context of a university, economic viability specifically refers to the institution’s long-term financial sustainability, ensuring that the university can support its academic mission and future growth. This financial sustainability is driven by scalable, adaptive, and growth-oriented financial management, which empowers universities to expand their resources, programs, and infrastructure in response to evolving demands. Such financial agility ensures long-term viability, institutional resilience, and global competitiveness. For Nigerian universities, the discussion around future readiness is particularly urgent. These institutions face significant financial hurdles, including limited government funding, growing demand for higher education, and intensifying global competition.

- ItemOpen AccessCommissioning of facilities at the Distance Learning Institute(2022) Udeani, U.It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to this event which marks the commissioning of two facilities in the Distance Learning Institute. (i) The Water Storage, Treatment and Distribution Facility (ii) The Equal Opportunities E-Resource Centre A brand new water storage treatment and distribution facility was constructed to ensure water security within the premises. This was aimed at providing clean water and improving sanitation. It required a complete restructuring of the whole water supply architecture – activating an unused borehole, changing out the rusted ground and overhead metal tanks, rusted metal pipes, unserviceable pumps and complete renovation of all toilet facilities. We believe that in so doing we have addressed the SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).
- ItemOpen AccessCommodification of Education: What Imperatives for Transforming University Education in Nigeria(2018-06) Fagbohun, O.AIt is a great privilege and honour to have been invited to address this distinguished audience. For this, permit me to place on record my gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the University of Lagos Alurnni Association, Lagos State Branch and the University of Lagos community. When the Vice Chancellor mentioned the idea of deli vering the 2018 Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe Memorial Lecture to me, I immediately expressed my excitement at the prospect. Then, he saddled me with the responsibility of picking my own topic. That was where I had my challenge: what topic will be of wider interest, befitting of the memory of this pre-eminent scholar of distinction, and has not been sufficiently discussed.
