The paper therefore suggests repentance from sin as a precondition for National Rebirth.

This occurs as a result of the practical heritage and cultural values of Islam in the social unity and development ofseveral nations in the Europe, Asia, Middle-East and Africa. The major difference between Islam and other religions is that the former combined together both secular and spiritual life style of man as a single and inseparable entity in its practicability while the latter deal only with the spiritual life of man in his society. Thus, Islam is not just an observance of ritual duties of mankind but as well as a major and vital instrument of making societal harmony and peace by the promotion of virtues (Amr bi 'l Ma'rufi and shunning-off of the vices (Nahyu ani' f-Munkar) in politics, economic and social life of mankind. In the light of this development, the paper attempts to examine some prevalent societal indisciplines in Nigeria with the solution from the Islamic perspective in order to pave way for societal harmony and peace in the contemporary Nigerian society

The problems of evil become more serious among religionists and philosophers who uphold that both evil and God exist, even though they argue it on different perspectives. The religionists argue the existence of evil and God with the method of dialectical argument while the philosophers argue it with philosophical speculative reasoning. The notable point in their argument on the, existence of evil and God appears as if the confirmation of one is the denial of the other. This is where the problem arises in the concept of evil and theistic headship of God. Thus, this paper aims at having a cursory look at problems emanated from the existence of evil in human societies and the headship and superiority of God in the Yoruba, Christianity and Islamic beliefs.

In order to achieve our aim the paper looks into the definition of child abuse for more clarification of the term, then the paper highlights various types of child abuse existing ill Nigerian society. It looks into the historical development of Shura as a method of representation in the prc-Islarnic days ill the Arabian peninsula and prophet's period up to the time or the last Caliph or the rightly guided caliphs Khulafa'ur-Rashidin} in person of Ali Ibn'Abi Talib in 661 C.E. Qur'anic and sunnatic concept of Shura also explored ill the paper. It also examines the institution of Shura within the framework of Shariah legal principle and its essence in an ideal Islamic political setting. The paper concludes with the findings and suggestions for the utilization of the Shura in solving Muslim private and public affairs.

The Shari'an issues in Nigeria generated a lot of controversies and arguments that the country was nearly torn-apart. Shari'ah crisis in the contemporary period in Nigeria has reached its zenith since the official announcement of Zamfara State to codify the Shari'ah legal system and extend it to cover criminal matters in 1999. This development generated a lot of controversies among Nigerians. It is on this line that this paper aims at examining the Shari'ah. crisis in Nigeria in the contemporary period. The paper is introduced by the clarification of the misconception that Nigeria is a ecular nation whereas she is a multi-religious nation where several religious beliefs co-exist. The paper gives working definitions of some of the key words featuring in it and goes further to discuss Shari'an legal system in Nigeria from he historical perspective. The paper then examines the Shari'ah crisis in the recent Nigeria and its side-effects on Nigerians. It also casts a critical look at some factors responsible for the shariah crisis in Nigeria and how to curb them.

The place of Muslim women, as articulated by some jurists, has not only defined her role and identity, it has also set the parameters of how that role and identity has been manipulated by various categories of the people on the basis of their sex difference in the 'human society. The aim of this paper is to examine the place of Muslim women under Shari 'ah in the face of modern societal challenges. The paper shall demonstrate the rightful position of the Muslim woman under Islamic family law (Ahwalu'sh-Shakhsiyyah) as mother, wife and daughter. Then, it analyses the right of Muslim women and the contemporary challenges encountered in some of her societal needs.

- ItemOpen AccessA Model for Teaching Qur'anic Texts in Nigerian Post-Primary Schools(Department of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria., 2010) Musa, I.A.; Adegoke, K.A.This study examines problems associated with teaching Qur'anic texts at the secondary school level in Nigeria and proffers logical solutions. The fact that the most accurate medium for accessing the Qur'an is the Arabic script makes mandatory the acquisition of literacy skills in Arabic. In the same vein, accuracy in reading without imbibing the Our'enic values is tantamount to truncating a journey beforereaching the intended destination. The Islamic Studies curriculum at the secondary school level prescribes certain Our'enic texts for study with a view of developing in learners the ability to read and memorize texts of the Qur'an accurately as well as imbibe the message, so that students can subsequently utilize the Qur'anic values in all spheres of life. However, the effective study of the Qur'an is threatened by the fundamental challenges teachers and students encounter in studying the Qur'an through the Arabic orthography. This paper proposes the Multi-task Model of acquisition of diverse competences which support effective teaching and learning the prescribed passages of the Qur'an at the secondary school level.

This paper examines the religion of Islam and the chieftaincy institution in the Sokoto Caliphate. The purpose is to see what elements of influence and impact that Islam has on the chieftaincy institution in the Sokoto Caliphate. The various influences and impacts of Islam on chieftaincy matters and institutions would help to determine the level of inter-relationship between Islam and the Sokoto Caliphate on chieftaincy matters. Our study would take us through the advent of Islam in the Sokoto Caliphate and give a historical sketch of the chieftaincy institution in the Caliphate. It would also take us through the religio-political Emirate-type of chiefs and title holders in the Sokoto Caliphate. Our conclusion would take the form of an application of the discovered levels of religio-political civil interaction of Islam and the chieftaincy institution to the Sokoto Caliphate context.

This study examined the Islamic teacher education curriculum in Nigerian schools and some challenges in the 21st century. This study gives us conceptual definition of some keywords featuring in the paper. It also discusses the historical development of Islamic teacher education curriculum in Nigeria and its aims and objectives. This is followed by the challenges facing the effective teaching-learning exercise of the subject in Nigerian schools and the way forward in form of suggestion and recommendation for the gearing up of Islamic teacher education in the country.

The paper concludes that the utilization of values of Islamic education is possible in Nigeria if Nigerians especially Muslims sufficiently understand the Islamic ethos and apply them to their educational endeavours. The effectiveness of educating the soul would guarantee peace which is the most important ingredient for development. The paper recommends among others, making religious studies a compulsory subject at both primary and secondary school levels while the values of concepts taught to learners should be emphasised.
