- ItemOpen AccessActivity Schedule and Anticipation Training as Counselling Strategies in Managing Mild depression among Nigerian Adolescents.(The Counsellor (Journal of the Counselling Association of Nigeria)., 2011) Olusakin, A.M; Bamidele, E.OThis study investigated the impact of Activity Schedule and Anticipation Training as counselling strategies in managing mild depression among Nigerian adolescents. Six Senior Secondary Schools were randomly selected from the educational Districts in Lagos State. The total population of SS 2 students in the six schools was 2,982. To select the participants for the study, the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) was administered to assess the cognitive, affective, psychomotor, somatic and social interpersonal dimensions of depression in the students. A test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.93, showing good reliability. After the baseline assessment, the total sample for the study comprised 96 participants. The sample accommodated all the characteristics of participants in the secondary schools chosen for the study. The two counselling techniques (Activity Schedule AS and Anticipation Training AT) were effective in managing mild depression. There was no significant gender difference in the post-test scores of participants across the three experimental conditions.
- ItemOpen AccessAdolescents Attitude to Parental Discipline and The Counselling Implications(Ife Journal of Educational Studies, 2005) Olusakin, A.MThis study examined the different parental styles and the conflict that usually occur in an attempt to discipline the adolescents. The sample was made up of 250 adolescents who were randomly selected from five secondary schools in rural and five secondary schools in urban areas of Osun State. They were between 12 and 20 years and their mean age was 16.2 years. Adolescent Attitude to Parental Discipline Scale (AAPDS) was used to collect the data. Three hypotheses were tested for significant at 0.05 margin of error using the z-statistic. The findings show that: Rural adolescents have better attitudes towards parental discipline than those adolescents do from urban areas. Males and females shared similar view on parental discipline. Also, early and late adolescents have the same attitude towards parental discipline. The counselling implications of the above findings were discussed.

A sample of 240 undergraduate students (150) males and 90 females) responded to Bem's sex role inventory (BSRI) to describe their concepts of their real self. This same group,s personal adjustment was measured using the revised Bell's Adjustment inventory. The result showed statistically significant between male and female subjects Real self means. These results were discussed in relation to Rogerian self theory. The implications for counselling were discussed.
- ItemOpen AccessApplication of Peace Counselling in the Management of Anger.(Eurojournals (Austria), 2007) Olusakin, A.MThis study was carried out to examine the applicability of peace counseling in the management of a very common human reaction called ‘anger’. 97(37 female and 30 male) graduate students of University of Lagos participated in the study. 34 participants were in the treatment group exposed to peace counseling while 33 participants were in the delayed treatment/control group. The results obtained from comparing the pre- and post-test scores of both groups using the analysis of variance and the General Linear Modal statistics showed that there was a significant difference in the mean scores and then specifically, those who went through treatment reported a significant reduction in their manifestationsof anger than those in the control group. However, no significant gender-based differencewas found in the analyses .This shows that whether female or male, people manifest anger that could be disruptive and that they could equally benefit from peace counseling.

The research design was quasi-experimental (Pretest/ Posttest control group method) The population for the study were Senior Secondary School in Lagos Metropolis. Two stage sampling technique as weUasproportionate stratifiedsampling procedure was used to select 540 participants based on their classtypes acrossfour schools (treatment group)and forty-five(45) from one school for the control group. Four research instruments was used, they are (Diagnostics;Formative; Summative) Mathematics Achievement Tests. (DMAT, FMAT& SMA 7J and Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS) by Obe (2002). Cronbachsreliabilitycoefficient for the three mathematics tests, which were 0.629 (Diagnostics), 0.769 (Formative)and 0.502 (Summative) respectively and the Spearman Brown reliability coefficient for the MAS was 0.555. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The empirical research findings revealed that class types and evaluation test types exerts significant impact on students' academic performance across the experimental groups while there is no significantimpact exerted on theirperformance by theirattitude to study between the experimental groups and the controlgroup among others. Based on the findings,it was therefore recommended among others, that teachers/educators should create feedback mechanism to students' after any of the three evaluation test types .such will help reveal to the students' their area of weaknesses .boost and maintain an increasing trend of scores. Also, the 'study will help enlightened the Nigeria governments to organize educative programmes for teachers to equip them with require skills and teaching methods that would make the content of their teaching easy and simple for students to understand for sustainable development.
- ItemOpen AccessAssessment of commercial drivers' perception of road safety education on compliance to road traffic rules and regulations in Delta State(2019) Nwadinigwe, I.P.; Osarenren, N.A.; Otuagoma, F.The Global strategic plan to reduce worldwide deaths from traffic injuries recognizes the driver as the key element in its approach. Hence drivers’ education has been accorded the highest priority in Nigeria by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC). Thus, this study seeks to assess the perception of commercial drivers’ on Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) education on compliance on road traffic rules and regulations in Delta state. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all commercial drivers in Delta State. A sample size of 320 respondents was selected for the study using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Two research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The Drivers’ Compliance on Road Traffic Rules and Regulations Questionnaire (DCRTRRQ) was used to collect relevant data. The data were analysed using Two-way Analysis of Variance Statistics. It was found out that … Road traffic safety education programme influenced drivers’ compliance to road traffic rules and regulations. Drivers’ experience was observed to affect their level of compliance to road traffic rules and regulations.
- ItemOpen AccessAssessment of Factors that Influence Academic Performance Of Students in Mechanical Trade Subjects in the Senior School Certificate Examinations in Lagos State, Nigeria,(Multi- Disciplinary Journal and Learning(MDJL) Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt., 2019-03) Akanni, O.O.The study investigated factors that influence students’ academic performance in mechanical trade subjects in senior secondary school certificate examinations in Lagos State, Nigeria. Mixed research design was adopted for the study. The study sample consisted of 133 participants: 117 students and 16 teachers in educational districts 1,2 and 4 of Lagos State. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used to obtain the sample size. Three research instruments were used for the study: students’ close-ended questionnaire, titled Students’ Low Candidature and Students’ Attitude in Mechanical Trade Subjects (SLCSAMTS), teachers’ open-ended questionnaire titled Teachers’ Low Candidature and Students’ Attitude in Mechanical Trade Subjects (TLCSAMTS) and Students’ Achievement Tests in Mechanical Trade Subjects titled Mechanical Trade Achievement Test (MTAT) .The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability analysis was employed (with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences-SPSS) to determine the reliability coefficient of the research questionnaires, which were 0.729 (Students) ,0.669 (Teachers) and the Spearman Brown reliability coefficient for the MTAT was 0.555.Four (4) hypotheses were formulated and tested to guide the study. Three (3) of the hypotheses were accepted (hypotheses 1, 2, and 4) while one hypothesis was rejected (hypothesis 3). The empirical findings from this research revealed that: quantitatively, there is no significant influence of gender, students’ age groups, and parental employment status on students’ academic performance in mechanical trade subjects respectively; however, students’ specialization/course exerted the influence. There is no significant influence of gender, students’ age groups, and parents’ employment status on students’ low candidature in mechanical trade subjects. Low candidature does not significantly influence students’ academic performance in mechanical trade subjects but Students’ attitude towards mechanical trade subjects significantly influences their academic performance. Qualitatively, students’ attitude towards Mechanical Trade Subjects significantly influences their academic performance. The possible rationales includes lack of teachers’ competence in teaching the trade subjects, students’ preference for white collar jobs, unavailability of learning materials, uninspiring teachers who are forced to xteach the subject, poor remuneration, government policies, the subjects were not basic requirement for entering higher institutions among others. Some of the recommendations made was to the Nigerian government who were encouraged to ensure that adequate funding is given to the programme of mechanical trade subjects, and that in collaboration with Private Industries they should create public awareness on the dividends of mechanical trade subjects through the social media.

This is very crucial and important for students’ academic achievement. Teachers’ characteristics (content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, experience and qualification) are components of teachers’ competence that affect the academic achievement of students. It is in line with this that the study examined the assessment of teacher’s test construction competencies on achievement in physics among adolescents in Education District IV of Lagos State, Nigeria. The research design was a descriptive survey ,the population for the study were all senior secondary II student in Education district IV of Lagos-state. Simple stratified random sampling technique was used for collection of one hundred and eighty-two (182) students and twenty-one (21) respondents of teachers in Education district. The instruments for the study were a questionnaire titled: Test Construction Skill Inventory (TSCI). Three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance.. Findings from the study revealed that gender did exert a significant influence on teachers’ competencies in test construction skills. That is, there is significant difference between the assessment of male and female teachers’ competencies in test construction skills;, there is no significant influence of the assessment of teachers ’competencies in test construction skills on their academic performance and qualification. Recommendations were made based on the findings that school teachers should ensure that they get up-to-date skills set on the culture of test construction that will have influence on students’ academic achievement (in Physics).

- ItemOpen AccessAssessment of the level of preparedness of independent national electoral commission towards inclusion of voters with disabilities in 2019 election in Nigeria(Journal of Educational Research on Children, Parents & teachers, 2020) Adeniyi, S.O; Kuku, O.OElection is one of the fora for selecting leaders into various positions of authority, which demands collective representation and participation in governance by every member of a community, state or nation. Hence, it is a right for all with reference to certain criteria as obtainable in communities across the globe. However, some people may have been denied this right because of race, position and differences in physical mental, emotional, sensory and psychological attributes considered to be at variance to the extant laws. Consequently, this study investigated the level of preparedness of the Independent Electoral Commission towards inclusion of voters with disabilities in 2019 general election in Nigeria. The study employed ex-post facto research design. A sample of 1001 adhoc officers trained for the election was selected from different training zones. Disabilities Voting Inclusive Scale with reliability of 0.75 was used to collect data. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistic such as percentage and bar chart. The results revealed that physically challenged and albinos were fairly included while individuals with visual and hearing impairment were grossly at disadvantage. It was recommended that the Nigerian electoral body should involve the services of experts in the area of Special Needs while preparing for election. This will ensure that the needs and interest of people with disabilities are adequately taken into consideration during election
- ItemOpen AccessAttitudes of Women to menopause: implications for counselling(African Journals Online, 2009) Osarenren, N.; Ubangha, M.B.; Nwadinigwe, I.P.; Ogunleye, T.Menopause, a normal midlife transition for women remains poorly understood. This study examined the attitudes of women to menopause. A total of 300 married female teachers made up the sample for the study. Data was collected using the modified Attitude Towards Menopause (ATM) checklist. The responses of the participants were analyzed using simple percentages. The results showed that an overwhelming majority of the respondents indicated concern about how their husbands will feel about them after menopause (98%); women should see a doctor at menopause (91%); menopause is an unpleasant experience (83%) among others. The implications these findings have for counselling and counsellors were discussed. The focus was on the key strategies the counsellor should adopt in helping women to cope with menopause and also develop positive attitudes toward it.

They make learning more interesting thereby contributing to in-depth way of learning. The use ICT can improve education quality, expand learning opportunities and make education accessible. However, the stage of ICT facilities in Nigerian secondary schools show that there is a slow wave of development. Hence, this study investigated the availability and utilization of Information Communication Technology on Mathematics achievement among adolescents in Education District IV of Lagos State. The descriptive research design was used and the populations for the study were all senior secondary school students’ in Educational District IV of Lagos-state. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select two hundred and forty-two (242) senior secondary school students and twenty-four (24) teachers. The instruments was a self-constructed questionnaire title Availability and Utilization of ICT questionnaire (AUICT) and a Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT).Three hypotheses were tested at 0.5 level of significance to guide the study. Findings from study revealed that the availability of ICT resources in secondary schools was not efficient in impacting academic achievement in Mathematics among adolescents; while adolescents’ utilization of ICT resources (i.e. the culture of using these available ICT resources among the students) was also not efficient in boosting academic achievement in Mathematics and the joint effect of the availability and utilization of ICT resources was not significant on the adolescents’ Mathematics achievement Based on the research findings, it was recommended that even though ICT resources are available, school owners and stakeholders should endeavor to match the availability of these ICT resources with the accessibility to use them for sustainable educational development.

The results of the WestAfrican School Certificate Evaluationsfrom 2006-2015 portrayed poor performance in Mathematics. There could be some factors surrounding the students which may be affecting their academic performance in school. The study investigated a causal relationship of some teacher variables like teachers' gender; age, qualification, leadership style, methodology, assessment techniques and students' academic achievement. An ex-post facto design was adopted for the study with the population comprising all Senior Secondary School Two (SSI!) students and their Mathematics teachers Edo State, Nigeria. Three Local Government Areas were randomly selectedfrom each of tie three Senatorial Educational Districts in Edo State. This gave rise to nine (9) local government areas. From each of the selected Local Government Areas 10 Secondary Schools were randomly selected to give 90 participating secondary schools. This gave 90 teachers • Mathematics from the 90 participating secondary schools, 10 students comprising (5male) and (5 female) were selected using the simple random sampling technique among the Senior Secondary School II students making a total of900 students. Two sets of instrument are usedfor data collection; these were, Teacher Variables Instrument (TV!) and Students ahievement Test in Mathematics (SATM). The reliability and content validity coefficients "these instruments were established using CronbachAlpha and Lawshe method respectively e coefficients were r = 0.79 and O. 75 (TV1) and r = 0.75 and O. 77 (SATM) respectively

Violence is not restricted to the time of war but it exists everywhere - in homes, schools and communities. Where there is injustice, there is conflict. Some argue that much of the conflicts in the world can be attributed to the existence of an oppressive systern of power that reinforces differences between groups and allows one group to have power or privilege over another group. it can be a productive force. Sensitisation of the populace will go a long way to reduce incidences of violence in the nation.

They are striving to achieve emotional independence from their parents, develop mature relationships with others and understand their own identities and they are constructing an ethical framework to guide behaviour while preparing for their economic futures and beginning to assume new adult roles in their families and communities. They must manage these various interrelated tasks during a tempestuous period of rapid personal change, marked by physical, social, emotional and cognitive developments. The young people who make the transition to adult life most successfully are those who have the opportunity to approach these developmental tasks in a supportive learning environment within the context of families, communities, workplaces and schools.

Lagos Education Review (A Journal of Studies in Education by Faculty of Education, University of Lagos)., 2014) Omoegun, O.M; Ubangha, M.B; Emeri, P.NThis study investigated childhood experiences and adolescent delinquent behaviour among remand home inmates in Lagos, Nigeria. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The participants for the study consisted of 180 adolescents selected from the different remand homes or correctional centres in Lagos state using stratified random sampling technique. The instrument used in the data collection was a self-designed questionnaire consisting of; Personal Data Inventory (PDI), Childhood Experiences Structured Inventory (CESI) and Delinquency Structured Inventory (DSI). The data collected were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the analysis showed that there is a significant difference between parental use of corporal punishment during childhood and adolescent delinquency. Parental use of invectives was also found to have a significant effect on adolescent delinquency. Based on the results, it was recommended among others that parents should provide pleasant childhood experiences to their children to avoid delinquency.
- ItemOpen AccessCognitive Skills as Predictors of Students’ Academic Achievement in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination .(International Journal of Educational Research (IJER), Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, 2021) Akanni, O.O.This research work assessed cognitive skills as predictors of academic achievement of senior secondary school students’ in ’education district two of Lagos state. The descriptive survey research design was adopted in the study. The population of the study includes all the secondary school students in public schools in educational district II of Lagos state. The sample of the study consisted of two hundred (200) students randomly selected through stratified random sampling techniques. The instruments used for data collection was a self-developed questionnaire (CSPSAASQ) and the English Language Achievement Test (ELAT). The instrument has a reliability coefficient of 0.82 and 0.745 when tested during the pilot study. Three null hypotheses were tested to guide the study and all were rejected at 0.05 level of significance. The results of the analyses revealed that; students abstract thinking, logical reasoning and memory cognitive skills will significantly impact on academic achievement of students in senior secondary school certificate examination (SSCE) in Lagos state. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that students should be encouraged to cultivate good cognitive skills that can help improve their intelligent quotients, which can significantly improve their academic achievement in the SSCE amongst others.
