- ItemOpen AccessCounselling implication on causes of examination malpractice among university students(Faculty of Education, 1995) Nwadinigwe, I.P.This study investigated counselling implication on causes of examination malpractice among University students. The sample comprised 72 P.G.D.E. Students who were administered self-concept scale and test instrument. The finding shows that students who cheat in examinations have lower self-concept than those who do not cheat in examinations. Again female students were found to cheat during examination more than male students. Counselling strategies to redress the negative effect of malpractice in Examination include mounting of remedial programmes for academically weak students, effective study habit and examination taking technique; mounting a war on Examination malpractice for teachers, parents, students and school administrators to reduce the attraction to engage in examination malpractice.

This is because school societies/clubs help students to develop their social skills. They fine-tune their interactions with their peers and with their Teachers. They have the opportunity to connect with other students who share similar interests. These interactions may form the basis for enduring friendships and enhance their vocational development.
- ItemOpen AccessLearning disabled and Normal achieving Students’ Causal Attributes for Their Performance Outcomes.(Lagos Education Review, 1997) Olusakin, A.MThis study explored the learning-disabled and the normal achieving students’ causal attributions of their performance outcomes and the teachers’ perception of these students’ level of learned helplessness. Twelve teachers (JSS 3 subject teachers) and forty-two students formed the subjects of this study. Analysis of variance was used in testing the five null hypotheses stated in the study. All the five null hypotheses were rejected because there were statistically significant difference among the groups compared. Teachers perceived their normal-achieving students as being less prone to learned helplessness than the learning – disabled students. The learning-disabled students’ ability attribution were less than those of the normal-achieving students. Test completion was found to arouse feelings of happiness for both the learning-disabled and the normal-achieving students and it was also found that the normal-achieving students were more persistent in learning tasks than the learning-disabled. Some implications for counselling are that there is need for effective school counselling to specially attend to the learning-disabled students and pay particular attention to their problems.

A sample of 240 undergraduate students (150) males and 90 females) responded to Bem's sex role inventory (BSRI) to describe their concepts of their real self. This same group,s personal adjustment was measured using the revised Bell's Adjustment inventory. The result showed statistically significant between male and female subjects Real self means. These results were discussed in relation to Rogerian self theory. The implications for counselling were discussed.

To accomplish this, however,the workers need to be motivated.We shall consider the issue of motivation under the following headings: a. What is motivation? b. Motivation theories - an overview; c. Motivating your staff via; (i) recognition and appreciation; (ii) effective communication. d. The role of motivation in school management. e. What is motivation? The term motivation has been identified as unquestionable fact of human experience, an indisputable fact of behaviour, and not a mere explanatory fiction. Motivation is closely connected with the reasons for acting in particular ways and it can also be described as a hypothetical cause of behaviour. Motivation as a concept is used to described forces acting on or within an individual to initiate and direct his behaviour. It is also used to explain the differences in the intensity and the direction of behaviour. There is a popular saying that there is no smoke without fire'. People behave in certain ways at one time and yet at another time they behave in another way. The concept of motivation helps to explain why certain bebaviour occurs in one situation but not in others. But the intervening nature of the motivational process makes the study of motivation difficult. The temporary nature of motivation is another obstacle to the study of motivation. Psychologists, however, describe the temporary nature of motivation by pointing out that motivation is a performance variable. As a performance variable, motivation is often contrasted with learning. Though we learn many things not immediately demonstrated in behaviour. howwer, the actual demonstration of learned be- , haviour depends upon adequate motivation.

This bas become most important in Nigerian educational system especially as the society frowns at:the progressive deterioration in educational standard. Peretomode (1991) opined that: leadership in educational administration bas far-reaching effects on the accomplishment of school programmes, objectives and the attainment of educational goals. In the School system the leadership function is performed by the principals. The principal's level of mastering and application of managerial competence and style will determine the nature of followership by the teaching and non-teaching staff who constitute avenues for implementation of the curriculum.
- ItemOpen AccessReality Therapy As a Technique of Stress Management among Nigerian Married Women.(Research Report in Education, 1997) Olusakin, A.MThis study examined the efficacy of Reality Therapy as a technique of stress management among Nigerian married women. The sample was made of 116 married women working at the Federal Secretariat. Half of this number constituted the experimental group while the remaining half formed the control group. A pretest post test experimental design was utilised marital Stress Inventory (MSI) was used as research Instrument. Two null Hypotheses were tested and the result showed that there was a significant difference in the pre-test and post-test scores of married women exposed to Reality Therapy. Significant difference was also found in the post - test scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. Reality Therapy was recommended for use in counselling married women who have marital stress
- ItemOpen AccessThe Effect of Formal Education on the Nigerian Women’s Attitude towards Family Planning:(Women Education and Development, 1998) Olusakin, A.MThis study was undertaken to find out the possible influence cf formal education on the Nigerian women's attitude to family planning. A total 1030 women (528 with formal education and 502 without formal education) formed the subject of this study. lndependent T-Test analysis of the data collected through the questionnaire resulted in the rejection of all the three null hypotheses tested for in the study. Women with formal education chose to have fewer number of children by embracing family planning more than those without formal education. The counselling implications were discussed.
- ItemOpen AccessA study of the Determinants of Vocational Choice among Senior Secondary School Students in Osun State.(Journal of Social Science and Population Education., 1998) Olusakin, A.MIn this paper, the basis for the choice of career among Senior Secondary School students was carefully considered. 110 Senior Secondary School students (SSS 1 - 3) were randomly selected from 10 secondary schools sampled. Their mean age was l7 years. The result of the study indicated that parental influence, peer group, monetary reward and personal interest were prominent among the students perceived determinants of their vocational choice. The result also showed that peer group pressure was the number one factor that determines the choice of vocation It was suggested that career Guidance and counselling should be made available not only to the students but also to their parents to forestall conflicts
- ItemOpen AccessThe Prevalence of Occupational Stress among Secondary School Teachers in Lagos State.(West African Journal of Counselling, Psychotherapy., 1998) Olusakin, A.MThe study examined the seriousness of work-related stress especially among Teachers in Lagos state. Teaching and Non-teaching staff working in the schools were compared regarding their stress levels. There were 74 in each group, making a total of 148 participants. The result showed significantly higher level of stress among Teachers compared to the Non-teaching staff. However, no significant difference was recorded between male and female Teachers regarding their stress levesl. Implications for the psychological health of Teachers were discussed.
- ItemOpen AccessGender Inequality and the Status of Widows in Nigeria:(Journal of Research in Counselling Psychology, 1998) Olusakin, A.MWidowhood is the state of being a widow. It is a tragedy which befalls married women by the death of their husbands. Although death is natural phenomenon which must occur at one point or the other. This paper seeks to examine the status of widows in Nigeria 240 Nigerians participated in the study (60 each randomly chosen from four states of the federation. Out of the 240 participants, 120 were men while 120 were women The results of the t-test showed that widowers are better treated by the society. There was a significant difference in the perception of the status of widows among men compared to women's perception (t=44.05;t crittcal = 3 29: df = 238; p .005). Some counselling implications of the status of widows in Nigeria were discussed.
- ItemOpen AccessTheories of Guidance and Counselling and Their Applications in the process of Curriculum Development(JAS Publishers, 1998) Olusakin, A.MGuidance is a very broad term which has to do with the assistance given to people to facilitate the achievement of their goals; to enhance their self understanding and help them in making the right choice. Guidance is closely related to every aspect of life. When viewed within the educational setting, it is connected to every aspect of the school curriculum, the methods of instruction, the supervision and disciplinary procedures. It produces the much needed link between the school, the home and the community. Among the services provided under the umbrella of Guidance is the counselling service which is an helping relationship through which the trained Counsellor interacts with the client to help him. Even though ‘Guidance’ and ‘Counselling’ are at times used interchangeably but there is a thin line of demarcation between the two terms. Counselling is a therapeutic process through which individuals are helped to define their goals, make decisions and solve problems related to personal-social, educational and vocational concerns. Through Guidance and Counselling such services as information, orientation placement, appraisal, evaluation follow-up, consultation and other personnel and social services are provided to facilitate a meaningful understanding of the individual. The definition of theory is general and specific.
- ItemOpen AccessPrincipals’ Perception of Teachers as Facilitators.(African Journal of Education, 1998) Olusakin, A.MThis study was carried out to examine the perception of secondary school Teachers as facilitators by their Principals. Also the perception of the Teachers themselves regarding their role as facilitators. The study was carried out in Lagos and had 35 Principals and 280 Teachers as subjects. No significant difference was recorded between the male and female Principals perception of their Teachers as facilitators. However, a significant difference was observed between the Principals and the Teachers perception of Teachers as facilitators with Teachers scoring themselves higher as facilitators. Implications for better Teachers motivation were discussed.

The challenge is not met without effort and responsibility. Consequently, many people can benefit from counselling in their search for health. Health is more than the absence of disease. It is a system of maintaining life, fueled by the body, the mind and the spirit. Good health is as much a state of mind. How the body functions is intimately connected to how a person thinks and feels, that is, to cognitive and emotional processes. The complex relationships among thinking, feeling, and behaving are the prime determinants of health.

Among the groups that need special counselling are the auditory- impaired clients. These clients have been variedly described by professionals and laymen alike as "hard of hearing, deaf, deafened, partially deaf, and partially hearing:. These erms are used, according to Kirk and Gallagher (1979) to differentiate some hearing- -impaired children from the other. For instance, deafened refers to someone who once d hearing, developed language and speech, but later became deaf; Hard of hearing are tose whose hearing is disabled to an extent (usually 35 - 69 dB ISO) that makes difficult but does not preclude the understanding of speech through the ear alone, without or with a hearing aid, whereas a deaf person is one whose hearing is disabled '0 an extent (usually 70 dB ISO or greater) that precludes the understanding of speech • rough the ear alone, without or with the use of hearing aid (Moores, 1978). Auditory impairment (Hearing loss) was defined by the Conference of Executives 0' American School for the Deaf (1925) as a "genetic term indicating a hearing disability . at may range in severity from mild to profound".
