- ItemOpen AccessComparative Assessment of Physical Fitness Profile of Female College Students(De-Sunshine International Publishing Company Lagos, 1998) Otinwa, G.O.Physical activity enhances health in numerous ways. According to Bouchad etal (1990) physical fitness is strongly related to physical activity. Growing amount of data suggests that there are also association between physical fitness and health. Hence, this study was designed to determine whether there will be any significant differences in the physical, health and performance fitness status of college of education, Lagos, were used for comparative purposes. The American Alliance for health, Physical Education and Reaction (AAPHERD) proposed fitness test was used in the assessment of the subjects. Descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation and range, as well as inferential statistics of “T” - test were employed in the analysis of data. Results obtained indicated significant differences in Heart- rate, Health-Related and performance related variables, all in favor of physical and health Education students except in agility test where there was no significant difference. The need for students to be actively involved in regular exercise and the implications of active living were highlighted. It was recommended that formation and approval of physical fitness club as well as introduction to recreation which shall be made compulsory be encouraged in higher institutions of learning. This might enhance physical fitness status of college students and consequently prevent risks of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, poor body posture and back pain.

- ItemOpen AccessCHANGES IN HEAMATOLOGICAL AND HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS VARIABLES OF REHABILITATED MALE DRUG ADDICTS FOLLOWING STRUCTURED EXERCISE PROGRAMME(2001) Otinwa, G.O.The purpose of the study was to find out the need for a structured exercise programme in the rehabilitation process of drug addicts. Rehabilitated male drug addicts at Adeniji Adele Rehabilitation Centre (Phase II), Lagos, were subjects used for this study. The pretest – posttest experimental research design was used. Subjects were placed on a structured exercise programme, three times per week (45 minutes each day) for twelve weeks. Incentives were given to the subjects in the form of material gifts donated by Nigeria Breweries Plc and wonder foods, Nigeria which enhanced subjects compliance to the exercise programme. The main variables on which this study was based included heamatologically related variables (heamatocrit, heamoglobin concentration, systolic and diastolic blood pressures) and health-related fitness variables (cardio- respiratory endurance, percent body fat, flexibility, muscular endurance). Data were subjected to descriptive statistics including the mean, standard deviation, and range. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 0.05 level of significance was used to test for any significant difference in the pretest and posttest measures. Where appropriate, Scheffe ost hoc analysis was used. The findings of this study indicated that a 12 week structured exercise programme had a positive significant effect (P<0.05) on heamatologically related variables – heamatocrit and Hb (increased from 39.9 3.30% to 42.64 4.81% and Hb – 12.64 0.27 g% to 14.20 1.61 g %) and resting systolic and diastolic blood pressures (reduced from 114.40 10.03 mmHg to 103.60 8.10 mmHg / 78.80 8.33 mmHg to 70 7.64 mmHg). This study also revealed that significant positive changes (P<0.05) existed in health related fitness variables – cardiorespiratory endurance, (time to cover 1.5 mile reduced from 14.55 1.58 min/secs to 6.55 6.35 min/sec), percent body fat (8.69 1.65% to 6.33 1.07%), abdominal muscular strength (number of sit ups increased from 18.68 7.01/min to 30.72 7.64/min), and flexibility (sit and reach test increased form 31.64 4.24cm it 35.48 6.28cm). It was concluded that the exercise programme resulted in the improvement of heamatological and health related fitness variables of the subjects.

- ItemOpen AccessMaintaining Cardio-respiratory Fitness through Healthy Living(Sunshine International Publications (NIG) ltd., 2002) Otinwa, G.O.The paper highlighted the onset of gradual dominance of. generative disease. One of such is the coronary heart diseases which hinders cardiorespiratory fitness. This could possibly be caused by unhealthy eating habits, the control of :the environment with little energy expenditure and unusual stress. Cardiorespiratory fitness is composed of cardiovascular functions and respirations. It is described as a condition in which the heart is able to pick up oxygen and circulate to the working muscle. To maintain the fitness level, feeding adequately with controlled intake of high cholesterol foods will reduce the risks of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Active living in form of consistent walking, jogging, running and game activities as well as adequate rest and effective stress management were suggested. It was concluded that concern given to life-style modification and the challenge before Physical Educators is to involve youngsters early in habits of regular exercise, ' in order to achieve high fitness level in life.
- ItemOpen AccessMaximum Oxygen Consumption of Healthy African Male in United States of America(EuroJournals Publishing, Inc, 2005) Otinwa, G.O.This study was undertaken to assess the cardiorespiratory fitness of healthy African male residing in Cedar Falls, Iowa, U.S.A using actual measure of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max). VO2 max was determined using metabolic gas analyzer in an open circuit indirect spirometry at the Exercise Physiology Laboratory of University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, U.S.A. A total of 9 healthy African males who volunteered to participate in the study were measured for height, body weight, body mass index, and body fat percentage. Resting values including heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured. Subjects’ VO2 max was determined using single stage treadmill walk test with the indirect siprometry until subjects reached exhaustion. The highest volume of O2 consumed during one minute of testing was recorded as the maximum heart rate was monitored and recorded throughout the test. Statistical analysis of Vo2 max was based on the computer-generated equation, while descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation were used in the analysis. VO2 max of subjects was compared with Black Americans norms and was found to be above average. For further improvement in maximum oxygen consumption, aerobic activities such as walking, jogging and running performed 3-5 days a week for 30 – 45 minutes was recommended.
