- ItemOpen AccessESL coursebooks and self-instruction: A pedagogical evaluation(Nigerian Association of Language Educators/Sterling-Horden Publishers, 2002) Ohia, I.N; Adeosun, A.OThe chapter evaluated sample English Language course books in use in Nigerian secondary schools, and examined their validity in relation to learners’ autonomy and ease of use in self-instruction using clearly spelled out content and pedagogical procedures adapted from Ubahakwe (1991) ESL Pedagogical Model. Analyses of sample lessons from the texts focusing on the four language skills were done. The study found that the course books were varied in their approach to learner autonomy and independent study but lacked content and presentation balance which often require teacher mediation. It concluded that no single textbook can adequately satisfy the needs of different learners of English from varied language backgrounds, but made some recommendations on how the course books can be effectively employed.

- ItemOpen AccessIncorporating Islamic Ethics into Democratic Governance for Enhancing Morality and Discipline in Nigeria Society(Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos, Akoka, 2004) Adedeji, L.L.The paper observed that religion has been misunderstood by many people, particularly in Nigeria, where it is criticised as the cog in the wheel of development. The long existence of Islamic ethical principles notwithstanding, Islamic morality and ethics are yet to enhance the social values and development in Nigeria. The ability to make ethical decisions by the citizenry remains shallow as a result of selfishness and lack of consideration for the common good. The paper notes that cases of corruption, insurgency, kidnapping, armed robbery, financial crimes and other crises that pervade the country are moral issues which Islam envisaged, and has put internal mechanisms in place to resolve them before they rear their ugly heads. Islamic ethics which refers to set standards for determining the rightness or wrongness of an action seem to be receiving insignificant recognition. Yet, they are ingredients of sound moral values needed for any society to thrive. This paper aims at presenting Islamic morality as an important system for enhancing societal values. It recommends adopting the opportunities provided by religion to halt social degeneration by inculcating Islamic morality and ensure a stable society.

- ItemOpen AccessEconomics of acha (Digitaria Exilis) production in Jos-South Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria(Nassarawa State University. Keffi, Nigeria, 2005) Lawal, W.L.; Onoja, F.; Orji, K.This study investigated the economics acha (Digitaria exilis} production in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. Specific objectives were to examine the demography of the farmers, the factors affecting the production of acha in the study area and the costs and returns in acha production. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 acha farmers selected randomly from the study area. The result was analyzed using frequency distribution, means and parentage, gross margin analysis and regression analysis. The results showed that the average yield of acha produced per hectare was 625kg, while the gross margin was #48.025. This indicates that acha production was profitable in the area. Also, the regression analysis showed that labour, fertilizer, land and seeds explained only 37% of the variations in acha output. Only land significantly affects the production of Acha in the study area positively, (P=5%). It was suggested that further research should be carried out to identify other factors affecting output of Acha in the study area. Also, more land area should be cultivated and improved seeds should be made available to the farmers at affordable price, by government, to increase yield in acha production.
- ItemOpen AccessGross margin analysis of indigenous processing of soybeans in Benue State, Nigeria(Nigerian Society of Indigenous Knowledge and Development, Makurdi, 2005) Lawal, W.L.; Chisonum, M.O.; Ater, P.I.Economics of sovabean processing was investigated through a field survey of randomly selected 104 sovabean processors in Gwer Local Government, Benue state. Results indicated that majority of the soyabean processors were female who are of middle age and literate. Eight (8) products of soyabean were identified: Akpukpa, “soyamilk”, "Dawadawa", Soya beverage, Soya pap 2:5, 'Soya Soup, Soya cake, Soya flour 1:2:7. Soya oil was not produced traditionally in the area due to lack of processinq technique. Soyabean milk has the highest percentage of utility, while soyabean cake has the least. Processing of soyabean in the area is low as few of the users were actually engaged in the processing themselves. Processing into "Akpukpa" and soya milk were the most profitable with gross margin of #8,370 and #6,910 per 50kg raw soyabean respectively. This was followed by soyabean beverage and "Dawadawa" with gross margin of #4,450.00 and #2,610.00 per 50kg of raw soyabean respectively. "Akpukpa", soyarnilk, soya beverage "dawadawa" have gross ratios of 0.30, 0.30, 0.41, and 0.48 respectively. Problems associated with soyabean processing in the area were identified and recommendations were made to promote soyabean processing
- ItemOpen AccessProfitability of fish culture in Benue State: A prelude to a thriving fish culture enterprise in Nigeria(Benue University, Makurdi, Nigeria, 2006) Lawal, W.L.; Umeh, J. C.; Obinne, C. P. O.The study analyzed the profitability of fish culture in Benue state, Nigeria. The state was administratively divided into zones A, B and C. Data were collected from 196 randomly sampled fish culturists out of which 148 culturists with economic data were analyzed. The data were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics and net profit analysis. The results of the study indicated that variable costs cover about 93-95 percent of the total investment. This implies that the profit can be maximized by the use of cheap and effective alternative variable inputs, for example, the use of family labour; instead of the costly hired labour; and the use of cheap refuse from animals instead of inorganic fertilizer. The results also showed that fish culture was profitable in the study area despite the low standard of stocking density. Zone B was the most profitable, being located in the urban area, where the price of fish is relatively higher. The results also revealed that the practice of polyculture and earthen ponds generally generated a higher rate of returns on the investment than the practice of monoculture and concrete ponds. However, the difference in the rate of returns in the investments, among, investors adopting different fish culture technologies was not statistically significant at 5% level of significant. Fish culture technologies are still at its infancy in the state. These results encourage individuals to own homestead fishponds as this can give rise to revenue generation and increase in the supply of fish in the State. The Government using agriculture extension strategies may infuse some fish culture technologies into the state fishery sub-sector, given the high potential fish culture in the study area, cheaper sources of protein, employment and income generations and therefore, poverty alleviation become the potential gains from the improved fish culture enterprise.
- ItemOpen AccessAgricultural Productivity and Poverty Alleviation Issues:The Nigerian Perspective(Tropical Agricultural Research & Extension, 2006-09-19) Umeh, J.C; Lawal, W.L; Oboh, V.UThis paper reviews the pre and post independence agricultural productivity and pov-erty alleviation issues in Nigeria. Descriptive statistics and secondary data were adopted in the discussion. The review indicated that a laudable performance was re-corded in pre-independence period due to the establishment of model research farms. , Physical rural infrastructures like motor, roads and railways for easy evacuation of farm products, commodity boards for stability of producer prices, promotion of qual-ity of export crops, providing stable market outlet for export crops and generating for-eign reserves. All these resulted in the promotion of employment in both production and post-production of agricultural activities. Rural disposable income was high and this generated high demand for consumable goods in rural areas. Surpluses generated from foreign trade were used to finance a large number of development projects. In contrast, in post- independence period, the structure of rural infrastructure began to collapse with negative impact. Average growth rate for palm oil expenditure between 1935- 1939 was 30.88% and it dropped to 7.5 post-independence. Also, food crop productivity dropped, poverty level rose and food import bill escalated. This paper there-fore recommends the pre-independence model for Nigeria to use. This will encourage increase in Agricultural productivity, income level and consequently reduce poverty.
- ItemOpen AccessResource use efficiency in apiculture in Umuahia North Local Government Abia State, Nigeria(Nassarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria., 2007) Lawal, W.L.; Ibegbulem, U. O.; Ajani, O. I.The resource use efficiency in apiculture was studied in Ummahia-North Local Government of Abia State, Nigeria. The data for the study were collected through the use of questionnaire randomly administered on 40 honey producers. The data for the study were analyzed using enterprise budgeting technique and regression analysis. The study showed that apiculture is profitable in the study area. The net profit was #22,435.42 per farmer with an average of 24 hives per farmer, while the rate of return on the total investment was #1.06. This indicated a good financial performance. The result of regression analysis showed that the combined effect on the resources input on the output of honey was high (R2=0.95). Baiting materials, number of bee hives and labour were significant in the production of honey. The production function was of an increasing return to scale, indicating that some resources were not efficiently managed. The research suggests efficient management of resources for the honey producers. More awareness should be created through seminars and extensive services to encourage farmers to engage in apiculture due to its enormous potential.
- ItemOpen AccessIn-Service Training for Primary School Teachers: Need, Focus, Problem and Prospects(Lagos: Bprint, 2007) Lawal, O.O; Adeosun, A.OConcerned about the dearth of continuous professional development for teachers in Nigeria, the empirical article analysed and evaluated the content, implementation modes, and perceived benefits of two training workshops given to primary school teachers of English. Topics covered include effective language teaching strategies, development and use of instructional materials, understanding and interpreting the curriculum, selecting textbooks, recognition of the learner’s needs and upgrading teacher’s skills and competencies in speaking, reading and grammar. The feedbacks, which were positive, were used to strongly argue for the need for regular and content specific training workshops for teachers at all educational levels.

- ItemOpen AccessDeterminants of farmers’ membership of cooperative societies in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State Nigeria(Department of Cooperative Economics and Management, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, 2008) Oboh, V. U.; Lawal, W.L.; Agada, M.This study was carried out in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State. It examined the socio-demographic factors affecting farmers' membership cooperatives. A multi-stage random sampling technique was employed to select sample size of 90 farmers as respondents. Structured questionnaires were used to collect relevant information from the sampled respondents. Data analyses were carried out using statistics such as frequency counts, percentages and the regression model. Results showed that the major types of cooperatives in the study area include the multipurpose, thrift and credit as well as agricultural in supplies cooperatives. Respondents also identified mass media, friends/relatives (and community development associations as key sources of awareness about cooperatives. The log it model identified age, sex, level of education and annual income to be significant in explaining the probability of farmers' membership cooperatives. The major constraints faced by members of the cooperatives include; inadequate savings, poor access to farm inputs and lack of government support. It is recommended that more efforts should be intensified by extensive agents to further educate farmers on the importance of forming and joining cooperatives. Government and non - governmental organizations (NGOs) should assist farmer-cooperatives through the provision of soft loans and agricultural inputs at subsidized rates.
