- ItemOpen AccessAfrican Traditional Communication Systems and Nigeria’s 20-2020 Development Goals(College of Management Sciences, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, 2013) Oketunmbi, E.O.Introducing ATCOMS as an acronym to African traditional communication systems, this paper discussed the concepts and channels of indigenous communication on the continent. It concludes that ATCOMS is a people oriented, participatory, and popular phenomenon in Africa. Therefore, it recommends the incorporation and exploitation of ATCOMS in NV 20-2020 and notes that such a step will be a right one in the right direction.
- ItemOpen AccessBeyond Influence: Media and the 2015 Presidential Election(Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, 2018) Ibraheem, I.A; Ogwezzy-Ndisika, A; Tejumaiye, J.AUsing the 2015 Presidential Elections, this empirical paper examines the limited and sometimes muted influence of the media during the period leading to the election and immediately after the election. The paper uses two issues to engage with the key theme of the study. The first issue is the disparity between media projections of the outcomes of the result of the Presidential election and the actual result. The second is the muted influence of the negative media campaigns on the result of the election. The paper makes a case for a rethink of the role of the media (especially mainstream media) in elections.

- ItemOpen AccessCommunication Barriers to Healthcare Delivery in Nigeria since the 1914 Amalgamation(Communication Studies Forum, Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 2014-06-01) Oketunmbi, EbonyThis paper identifies some communication challenges undermining effective healthcare delivery in Nigeria, particularly as the problems pertain to communicators, messages, channels, audience, and feedback. The challenges identified rest on the twin notions that all human activities, including healthcare delivery, revolve around the fulcrum of communication, and that a health problem effectively communicated, is a health problem effectively positioned for solution. This implies that there is a symbiotic relationship between communication and healthcare delivery in any society. Nevertheless, communication and effective communication, the paper observes, are worlds apart. To solve the problems, it recommends attitudinal changes among healthcare givers and healthcare recipients in the country and concludes that effective communication is indispensable to effective healthcare delivery system anywhere, since health, a state of general wellbeing in the body and mind, is the foundation of all wealth.
- ItemOpen AccessCommunication Techniques for Security and National Development in Contemporary Nigeria(College Press, Ibadan, Nigeria, 2014) Oketunmbi, E.O.; Ajilola, B.An issue of global concern, and a cause of great worry to all and sundry in Nigeria, security is a crucial factor in any attempt at national development. Therefore, this paper diagnoses and decries the state of security and development in Nigeria. Adopting and adapting the systems theory, the paper examines the interplay among national development, communication, and security. It argues that development, communication, and security are analogous to a vehicle, its engine, and its fuel respectively. Mutual inclusiveness rules in the scheme of things in a system of a vehicle propelled by an engine, which in turn is sustained by a fuel. The same principle applies equally to Nigeria because national development cannot occur unless there is communication to propel it, and security to sustain it. To tackle the problem, the paper proffers a communication-oriented solution based on development communication models that had succeeded in other contexts and societies.

It also reminds competing marketers and advertisers of their debt of corporate social responsibility to Nigerians and admonishes them to jettison deception and mediocrity for brand excellence, fair and responsible competition.
- ItemOpen AccessCultural Imperialism Theory and Mass Communication Research: A Critical Review(Forum for Communication and Media Research, Department of Theatre Arts and Mass Communication, Faculty of Arts, University of Benin, Benin, 2013) Oketunmbi, E.O.This paper explored the origin, basic postulations, and selected scholars’ comments on the cultural imperialism theory. Based on the five-item scale consisting of scope, testability, parsimony, utility, and heurism proposed by Julia Wood (1997: 55), this paper attempted a critical evaluation of the cultivation theory and concluded that it is a huge success in heurism, considering the intense and immense global debates it had generated and sustained for almost a century. The paper therefore recommended it as such to mass communication scholars and policy makers who are interested in the preservation of local cultures, with emphasis on the point that the subtle cultural modification potentials of foreign media contents is a living reality.
- ItemOpen AccessDysfunctional Home versus Educational Attainments among Selected Mass Communication Undergraduates at University of Ilorin(College of Education, Al-Hikmah University, 2014-12-01) Ajilola, B.A.; Oketunmbi, E.O.; Olakunle, E.O.It is an established fact that children everywhere attain and maintain different levels of performance in academic activities due to the interplay of myriad factors including the marriage statuses of children’s biological parents. Therefore, the paper used the survey research method and a structured questionnaire to determine whether the dysfunctional home syndrome might be a factor in academic performance among the entire members of the University of Ilorin Mass Communication Class of 2012. Findings showed that there is no significant correlation between dysfunctional home and respondents’ academic attainments. The paper therefore recommends that children from dysfunctional homes should note that an undesirable family background does not necessarily constitute a barrier to the attainment of academic excellence. The paper also recommends that other researchers should verify the study by replicating it with larger samples drawn from the six geo-political zones in the country.

- ItemOpen AccessGains and Pains of Liberalization of Broadcasting in Nigeria: A Critical Assessment(School of Communication and Information Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, 2006) Oketunmbi, E.O.Taking a swipe at common misapplications of concepts like deregulation, privatization, and commercialization in describing the contemporary situation of broadcasting in Nigeria, and arguing that the concept of liberalization best describes the current state of that industry in the country, the paper examines the benefits and problems that came in the wake of that epoch. And observing that the merits of liberalization outweigh their demerits, the paper recommends that the NBC should step up its regulatory role. And while calling on broadcast stations to restrict their signals to allotted frequencies, the paper also charges them to accord the greatest priority to educational programmes.
- ItemOpen AccessIdentifying and Using Variables in Mass Communication Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences(Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Akoka, 2018-06-01) Oketunmbi, E.O.; Aderibigbe, A.A.This paper recognises that mass communication research is tilting increasingly towards quasi scientific research methods, despite its multidisciplinary background. The tilt is a response to the global trend of rising bias against the humanities and social sciences, in favour of the pure sciences and technology. However, a vital point in the adaptation of the scientific method to communication research is the mastery and application of the concept of variable. This paper therefore explores the nature of research per se in human aspirations, in addition to the basic types, characteristics, and the pivotal role of variables in mass communication research. To demonstrate the presence of variables in all major stages of the research process, the paper also selectively reviews two published research reports, and concludes with a discussion of some pitfalls to avoid while working with variables.
- ItemOpen AccessThe Influence of Abule Oloke Merin Radio Drama in the Crusade against HIV and AIDS/STDS in Nigeria(Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2013-01) Akinwande, A.J.; Oketunmbi, E.O.This paper sought to determine the influence of the Abule Oloke Merin radio-drama series in promoting behavioural changes in matters concerning HIV/AIDS/STDs among 247 purposively selected regular listeners. Data analyses and interpretations revealed that the series were effective in promoting behavioural changes. Only a 14.6% minority preferred other media to radio and demographic variables contributed to the influence of the programme. Conclusion is that whenever Nigerian youths are the targets of communication innovations, the edutainment and infotainment strategies of harmoniously blending education or information with entertainment is a necessary pre-condition for success. Flowing from this, we recommend that development communication planners should use more media units in more broadcast stations in combination with the media preferred by a minority of the study's respondents.
